The Morón de la Frontera City Council has issued recommendations to prevent the Asian hornet from nesting in homes, following its detection in the municipality.
The Asian hornet (Vespa orientalis) has become an increasing concern in Morón de la Frontera. The City Council has published a series of recommendations aimed at residents to prevent this invasive exotic species, which is becoming more established in the province of Seville, from building its nests in houses.
Unlike other wasps, the Asian hornet shows a great adaptation to the urban environment and usually takes refuge in gaps and hollows in buildings, such as roller shutter drums, air chambers, false ceilings, or cracks in walls. Its behaviour becomes particularly defensive near the colony, posing a risk to people.
Preventive measures at home
The council recommends checking and sealing cracks or gaps in façades, especially in elevated and covered areas. They also advise installing screens on windows and access to patios to prevent the entry of insects.
Other guidelines include keeping organic waste containers and bins always closed, as well as avoiding the accumulation of stagnant water in pots, containers, or troughs, especially during the warmer months.
What to do if a nest appears
If a nest is found in a private residence, the City Council warns that it should not be attempted to be removed on your own. Hitting it, applying household insecticides, or blocking its exit can provoke an aggressive reaction from the insects and increase the risk of stings.
If the nest is inside a room or in the drum of a roller shutter, it is recommended to close the room, keep people and pets away, and avoid any handling until a specialised company intervenes. Since it is private property, the removal of the nest is the responsibility of the owner, who should contact an authorised pest control company.
If the nest is located on a façade facing the public road, in a park, a school, or any other municipal space, it should be reported to the Morón de la Frontera City Council so that the competent services can assess the situation. In case of an immediate risk to people's safety, 112 should be contacted.
The council calls for calm and citizen cooperation, reminding that prevention and responsible action are essential to minimise risks. In case of any doubts, it is recommended to avoid taking action on your own and always seek specialised services.
