The Estepa City Council has received the restoration works of the Islamic wall, an investment of €350,000 funded by the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination that lasted six months.
The Estepa City Council has declared the restoration works of the Islamic wall in the locality completed, a project that required an investment of €350,000 and six months of work. The intervention, funded through the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination, has allowed for the recovery of two sections of this medieval fortification, one of the most emblematic heritage elements of the city.
The reception ceremony for the works was held at the wall itself and was attended by the mayor of Estepa, Antonio Jesús Muñoz; the Heritage councillor, Ascen Castillo; the manager of Construcciones Campano, Manuel Campano; the site manager, Julián Arco; as well as the project architect, Antonio Raso, and the technical architect Francisco Pérez. They all explained to the media the scope of an intervention that has combined cleaning, restoration, and consolidation of the structure.
One of the most significant findings of the restoration was the discovery of a small staircase leading to a supposed surveillance room in one of the towers, an element that had not been documented by local historians until now. This finding adds new historical value to the ensemble, as it allows for a better understanding of the original configuration of the fortification.
The intervention has been carried out with a criterion of maximum authenticity, avoiding reconstructions and respecting the original appearance of the monument. According to the technicians, the conservation and stability of the existing remains have been prioritized, ensuring that the historical reading of the asset is as faithful as possible.
The mayor of Estepa, Antonio Jesús Muñoz, emphasized during the event that the intention of the governing team is to "look after our historical heritage, but without forgetting that it is also our duty to preserve it in the best possible conditions so that it can be enjoyed by future generations." Muñoz also announced that the City Council will continue working to obtain new lines of funding that will allow for the progressive restoration of the complete wall that once surrounded the city.
With this action, the Estepa City Council reaffirms its commitment to the protection and enhancement of historical heritage, which also becomes a key cultural and tourist resource for the municipality. The Islamic wall of Estepa, of Almohad origin, is one of the most important vestiges of the medieval period in the Sierra Sur region.
The works have been executed by the company Construcciones Campano, based in the province, and have been supervised by architects Antonio Raso and Francisco Pérez. The aerial photograph of the final result has been taken by the drone of Juanca Lagares.
For the residents of Estepa, the restoration represents the recovery of a space that can now be visited and enjoyed, contributing to the tourist offer of the locality. The City Council plans to signpost the restored section and include it in the historical routes of the municipality.
