The lifeless body of María del Carmen Díaz Granado, the 70-year-old resident of El Saucejo who went missing last Monday, was found on Tuesday in a mountainous area that is difficult to access, according to sources from the investigation. The woman, who had not been heard from since Monday morning, was last seen on Albarrada Street, in the western part of the urban area, as she walked to the village of La Mezquitilla, about two kilometres from the town.
The discovery occurred as part of a large search operation that mobilised nearly 200 volunteers, including locals, Civil Protection officers, the Civil Guard, and Local Police. According to the same sources, the woman was found in a rugged area, and it has not yet been determined how she got there or the causes of her death.
Following the discovery of the body, a judicial commission was activated, and the body was transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Seville for an autopsy. The Judicial Police is investigating the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and subsequent death.
The search began on Monday morning after family members alerted authorities that María del Carmen had not returned home and was not answering calls. Since then, agents from the VI Company of the Civil Guard based in Osuna, supported by aerial resources, combed the area alongside dozens of locals who voluntarily joined the search efforts.
The El Saucejo Town Hall, led by Mayor María Moreno, has expressed its sorrow over the tragic outcome and thanked the community for their involvement. In a statement shared through their social media, the family of the deceased expressed "the most sincere gratitude to all those who collaborated in the search, as well as to those who showed their support, help, and solidarity."
"Although the outcome was not what we all would have wished, we want to acknowledge and thank the effort, involvement, and closeness demonstrated by neighbours, volunteers, security forces, and all those who participated from our town and neighbouring villages," reads the family’s message.
Mayor María Moreno has also publicly thanked everyone who contributed to the operation. El Saucejo, a municipality in the Sierra Sur of Seville, has experienced with dismay these two days of anguish that ultimately had a fatal outcome.
Authorities have not yet reported whether there are indications of criminality in the death of María del Carmen Díaz Granado, pending the results of the autopsy. The investigation remains open to clarify the circumstances of the death.
