Seville City Council participates for the second year in the European EUTreeTag 2026 campaign and has marked 24 unique specimens with informative tags about their environmental benefits. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the value of mature urban trees.
The Seville City Council, through the Department of Parks and Gardens, has selected 24 trees in the city to participate in the second edition of the European EUTreeTag 2026 campaign. Each of these specimens displays an informative tag detailing their characteristics and the environmental services they provide to the city.
The campaign is taking place this year in 278 European cities, with over 1,000 trees identified. The goal is to bring citizens closer to the benefits that urban trees generate, especially mature specimens, and to highlight their role in the livability of cities.
The selected trees in Seville have been chosen for their size, location, and value to the community. Among them are species such as Ficus macrophylla, the London plane tree, the Indian laurel, and the ahuehuete, distributed across parks and streets in various neighbourhoods.
The tags include data such as species, trunk circumference, height, crown area, and annual ecosystem services: CO₂ stored, oxygen produced, and rainwater retained. This information has been obtained using the i-Tree tool, used in academic and professional settings to quantify the value of urban forests.
The delegate for Parks and Gardens, Evelia Rincón, explained the purpose of the campaign:
“With this campaign, we want Sevillians to easily and closely understand everything that lies behind a tree. We get used to seeing them as part of the city landscape, but each specimen provides shade, oxygen, helps regulate temperatures, and retains rainwater.”
Rincón added that the 24 selected trees are “just a sample of the enormous value that all our tree cover has,” and she emphasized the mature specimens, which “have grown alongside the city for decades and today constitute true environmental refuges in our neighbourhoods.”
Among the labelled specimens is a Ficus macrophylla located on Avenida de María Luisa, next to the Costurero de la Reina. Planted in 1929 for the Ibero-American Exhibition, it is classified as a unique tree and has a trunk circumference of over 6 metres, a height of about 24 metres, and a crown diameter of more than 20 metres.
Its large crown provides shade, reduces the heat island effect, and improves the environmental conditions of one of the city's main thoroughfares, which has high pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The species, known as the Australian fig, is characterized by its large leaves, dense crown, and a powerful root system that can develop aerial roots.
The remaining selected trees are spread across locations such as Seville Cemetery, Muralla de la Macarena Gardens, Valley Gardens, San Leandro Square, Chapina Gardens, Altozano Square, Santa Cruz Square, Murillo Gardens, Cristina Gardens, Palos de la Frontera Street, Virgen de Loreto Street, Bécquer Roundabout, María Luisa Park, Rosario Valpuesta Park, America Square, and Delicias Gardens.
The EUTreeTag campaign is held annually as part of the European project and aims to engage municipalities in promoting the value of tree cover. The signs placed on the trees allow any passerby to easily learn about the environmental benefits of each specimen.
