The University of Seville has announced the Fama Awards 2025-26, which recognise the research and knowledge transfer careers of five faculty members from different areas. The jury, chaired by Rector Carmen Vargas, awarded the prizes unanimously.
The University of Seville has revealed the names of the winners of the Fama Awards in its 2025-26 call, a recognition that distinguishes the research and knowledge transfer work of its Teaching and Research Staff. The jury, chaired by Rector Carmen Vargas Macías, reached the decision unanimously after evaluating the applications submitted in the five branches of knowledge.
In the field of Arts and Humanities, the awardee is María del Mar Bernal Pérez, a professor in the Department of Drawing. Bernal Pérez is a leading figure in contemporary graphic art and engraving in Spain, and her work has contributed to transforming the academic consideration of engraving, incorporating it into current debates on image, identity, sustainability, materiality, and new technologies. In addition to her scientific output, her role as a mentor for doctoral students and her management as department director stand out.
In the Sciences category, the award has gone to Juan Antonio Caballero Carretero, a professor of Nuclear Physics. An international expert in electroweak interactions, complex nuclei, and neutrino physics, Caballero Carretero has an excellent scientific output in world-renowned journals and a significant outreach effort. His leadership as the principal investigator of competitive projects and his role as a mentor for new doctoral students have also been valued.
In Health Sciences, the distinguished recipient is María de los Ángeles Pérez San Gregorio, a professor and specialist in clinical and health psychology. Her work has had a particularly significant impact in the fields of transplants, chronic diseases, and patients' quality of life. Pérez San Gregorio exemplifies the integration of research, clinical practice, and knowledge transfer, with an extensive scientific output and a vigorous role in directing doctoral theses.
In the category of Social and Legal Sciences, the awardee is Jesús Cruz Villalón, a professor and expert in labour law and social security. Considered a national and international reference in his field, he has significantly contributed to the development of Spanish labour doctrine and European and Ibero-American legal thought. He was recently awarded an honorary doctorate by the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.
Finally, in the Engineering and Architecture category, the jury has distinguished Antonio F. Guerrero Conejo, a professor and researcher in chemical engineering. A reference in applied rheology, product engineering, and the science and technology of complex materials, Guerrero Conejo has a broad scientific output and has been the principal investigator of numerous projects and contracts. He was recently awarded the Gold Medal 2026 by the Spanish Rheology Group and has been proposed for admission to the Royal Seville Academy of Sciences.
The jury for the Fama Awards was composed, in addition to the rector, of Daniel Escacena Ortega, General Secretary of Research of the Junta de Andalucía; José Rodríguez Quintero, Rector of the University of Huelva; Luis Ángel Trigo, Vice-Rector for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Knowledge Transfer of the University of Seville; and Montserrat Arista Palmero, Vice-Rector for Research of the University of Seville.
The Fama Awards represent one of the highest recognitions granted by the University of Seville for the research and knowledge transfer work carried out by its Teaching and Research Staff. With this initiative, the Hispalense aims to highlight and reward excellence in all areas of knowledge, from the humanities to engineering.
The awardees will receive their prize at an academic event that will be held soon at the Rectorate of the University of Seville, as reported by the institution in a statement.
