The Animal Protection delegate, José Lugo, refutes the PSOE's accusations regarding a supposed collapse of the zoosanitario centre and announces a new rodent control contract worth €500,000, five times more than the previous one.
The Animal Protection delegate of the Seville City Council, José Lugo, has responded to the criticisms from the Socialist Municipal Group, which claimed a supposed collapse of the city's zoosanitario centre. Lugo described the PSOE's statements as "irresponsible alarmism" and assured that the service is functioning normally, especially in summer when reports increase due to high temperatures.
In a press release issued this Sunday, the councillor emphasised that the new contract for disinfection, insect control, and rodent control has already been awarded and that work will begin on August 4. This contract, as detailed, amounts to €500,000, compared to the €83,000 allocated in 2023. "This represents a significant increase in the volume of available resources," he stated.
Lugo insisted that the zoosanitario's own teams continue to operate daily, including in schools, while the new contract comes into effect. "To say that the centres are abandoned is to misrepresent the truth," he pointed out. As an example, he cited the intervention in Ronda de los Tejares, in Triana, where over 300 metres of fencing, specific feeders, and foam in burrows have been installed to combat the presence of rodents.
Regarding the prevention of the West Nile Virus (WNV), the delegate reminded that the City Council maintains a monitoring device, with periodic technical meetings. The second meeting was held on July 24, and a third is scheduled before September. "We work with technicians and scientific criteria," he emphasised.
Lugo also defended the state of the Zoosanitario facilities, asserting that they are "fully operational" and that municipal veterinarians ensure daily healthcare for the animals, including hospitalisation when necessary. "Those who truly understand how the centre operates are its professionals, not those who seek to use them as a political weapon," he criticised.
The councillor recalled that José Luis Sanz's government is driving "the largest improvement process" of the Zoosanitario in recent years. Among the planned actions, he mentioned a comprehensive modernisation plan for the facilities, which will be executed by the municipal company Edificios Municipales, and the construction of new isolation and quarantine areas, with funding already reserved. "Interestingly, that action was never among the priorities of the previous socialist government," he added.
Finally, Lugo asserted the City Council's commitment to animal welfare and highlighted the Municipal Programme for the Management of Feline Colonies, described as "pioneering" and developed with the consensus of specialised entities and groups. "The PSOE should abandon an opposition based solely on creating headlines and generating alarm," he concluded.
