Mayor José Luis Sanz has presented the start of the works for the future pedestrian bridge over the Guadalquivir dock, which will connect the Los Remedios neighbourhood with the historic centre starting in the summer of 2027.
The City Council of Seville has launched the construction of the Princess Leonor Bridge, an infrastructure that will connect on foot the Los Remedios neighbourhood with the historic centre. The mayor, José Luis Sanz, presented the start of the works on Wednesday at an event next to the Guadalquivir dock.
The bridge, measuring 141.6 metres in length and with a main span of 100 metres without supports over the river, will have a usable width of 4 metres. It is designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and Spanish engineer José Romo, and its cost will exceed 10 million euros, fully financed by the private sector in a public-private collaboration model.
During the event, Sanz emphasised that the bridge will not only improve pedestrian connectivity between both banks but will also offer Seville residents a privileged viewpoint over the Guadalquivir. He also recalled that, after more than 20 years of paralysis, the recovery of the Altadis area is increasingly close to becoming a reality.

The project is part of the transformation of the VERA Sevilla complex, which occupies the grounds of the former tobacco factory and is expected to be completed by June 2027. The bridge, named in honour of the Princess of Asturias, is one of the strategic elements of this urban operation.
The foundation phase began last July, while the fabrication of the metal structure, carried out by the Grupo Dizmar company in Galicia, is progressing in parallel and will conclude in February 2027. The transport and assembly of the bridge, which will require large cranes, is scheduled for March and April 2027, and will be executed by Martín Casillas, who is also responsible for the foundation.
The finishing touches, such as flooring, railings, anchors, and lighting, as well as the construction of a viewing platform on the New York dock side, will take place between May and July 2027. The infrastructure will feature 140 programmable beacons that can be harmonised with significant moments in the city and Andalusia.
The bridge includes an intervention at its left head, in front of the Palacio de San Telmo, with a viewpoint and stairs that will connect the New York dock with the paseo de las Delicias. The presentation event was attended by the delegate of the Junta de Andalucía, Ricardo Sánchez; the president of the Port of Seville, Rafael Carmona; the president of the Seville Chamber of Commerce, Francisco Herrero; and the president of KKH Property Investors, Josep María Farré.
The VERA Sevilla project, covering approximately 50,000 square metres, involves an investment of 250 million euros and the creation of over 1,000 jobs. It will include 437 trees, 351 underground parking spaces, and nearly 100 surface parking spaces, as well as a public green lung of almost 5 hectares facing the historic centre.
The transformation of the grounds of the former tobacco factory will result in an area with green spaces, a hotel, restaurants, shops, offices, and facilities. Nine new streets and squares will be created to pay tribute to the First Circumnavigation of the World, which departed from Seville in 1519, including Paseo Puerto de Indias, Jardines Nao Victoria, Muelle de las Mulas, Paseo Fernando de Magallanes, Plaza de las Cigarreras, Pasaje de Jesús Atado a la Columna, calle Circunnavegación, Cronista Antonio Pigafetta, and Plaza de 1519.
Among the recovered properties is the building of the former residences of the Altadis engineers, which has been transferred to the city council and will be designated for public facilities. This space, over 1,000 square metres, aims to address the infrastructure deficit for the residents of Los Remedios, who will gain a new meeting point and services.
