The City Council of Seville inaugurates the renaming of the former Virgen de Consolación Passage, which is now called Calle Maestro Sastre Manuel Ibáñez. The change was approved by the City Council in May 2026, and Mayor José Luis Sanz presided over the event in Los Remedios.
The Mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, inaugurated this Friday the new signage of the former Virgen de Consolación Passage, in the district of Los Remedios, which will now be known as Calle Maestro Sastre Manuel Ibáñez. The change was approved by the City Council of Seville in May 2026, after the local government proposed the initiative to honour the tailor in December 2025.
The street is located just a few metres from the historic workshop run by Manuel Ibáñez on Asunción Street, a business opened in 1986 that, according to the City Council, is the only protocol tailoring shop left in Andalusia. The Mayor recalled that Ibáñez started in the trade at just 14 years old and that his establishment has become a reference for clients from all over Spain and abroad.
“It is an honour for me to inaugurate this street sign that, from now on, will bear the name of an illustrious neighbour of this beloved neighbourhood: Manuel Ibáñez”
During the event, Sanz emphasised that the recognition will not only serve to remember the mastery and entrepreneurial work of the tailor but also the affection of his neighbourhood. “Every time a neighbour sees this sign, they will remember his dedication to this city, his talent, his perseverance, and above all, the love he has always put into his entire career,” he added.
The Mayor highlighted the family's connection to the city and stated that “today Seville pays tribute to a generation of tailors who are an essential part of our identity.” He also noted the involvement of Manuel Ibáñez's son in the life of the district and his contribution to commercial dynamism through the Association of Merchants and various municipal councils.
“His name will be part of the street map because he is part of the living history of this city”
The Mayor framed this tribute within municipal initiatives to support traditional commerce, such as the Bono Sevilla and the Network of Iconic Establishments. “The dedication of this street to Master Tailor Manuel Ibáñez is an initiative with which the City Council wants to recognise the work of those, like him, who keep the artisanal and cultural fabric of Seville alive,” he stated.
With the new name, the residents of Los Remedios and any citizen passing through the area will see the updated name on the municipal street map. The signage is already effective and replaces the former Virgen de Consolación Passage.
