The British band led by Jay Kay performed this Saturday at the Plaza de España in Sevilla, the only concert of their tour in our country, with a show that combined classics and an emotional tribute to the victims of the Almería fire.

The Plaza de España in Sevilla turned into a giant dance floor on Saturday night. Jamiroquai, the band led by the charismatic Jay Kay, delivered the only concert of their tour in Spain at this iconic venue, and they did so with a show that lasted nearly two hours, leaving the audience captivated from the very first chord.

A Classic Start

The group jumped on stage shortly after ten o'clock at night, with a slight delay that prompted a few whistles from the audience. But the wait was worth it. As soon as the synthesiser of “Don’t Give Hate” played, impatience turned into euphoria. Jay Kay, with his unmistakable hat and sunglasses, greeted the crowd with a “Sevilla, how are you?” in a British-accented Spanish that earned the first applause of the night.

The second song, “Little L”, encountered a technical mishap that forced the band to stop and restart the song from the beginning. Far from being annoyed, the audience sang along to the double play as if it were a gift, enjoying the riffs from Rob Harris and the keyboards of Matt Johnson.

A Tribute to Almería and Extreme Heat

In the middle of the concert, Kay wanted to pay tribute to those affected by the Los Gallardos (Almería) fire, where thirteen people lost their lives just a week ago. “It’s a big part of my heart,” said the singer, who has filmed several music videos in that province. The audience responded with respectful silence and warm applause.

The heat was another protagonist of the night. Jay Kay himself joked about the Sevillian temperatures, asking the crowd “how they could live like this.” Despite the sweltering heat, the band was in top form, exuding energy in every song.

From ‘Space Cowboy’ to ‘Virtual Insanity’: The Final Stretch

The repertoire covered the greatest hits from Jamiroquai's discography, from “Space Cowboy” to “Canned Heat”, including “Alright”, “Light Years” and “Travelling”. But the climax came in the final stretch when Kay donned a hat with LED lights and launched into the most sung anthems: “Cosmic Girl”, “Love Foolosophy” and, of course, “Virtual Insanity”. The Plaza de España vibrated in unison, with thousands of voices singing at the top of their lungs.

For many attendees, it was a time-travel journey of three decades, when Jamiroquai burst onto the music scene with their fusion of funk, acid jazz, and soul. The incomparable setting of Plaza de España, which has already hosted artists like Maroon 5 and Juan Luis Guerra, once again proved its suitability for major musical events.

The concert ended past midnight, with the audience loudly calling for an encore that never came. But no one left with a sour taste. Jamiroquai more than delivered, and Sevilla witnessed a night that will be etched in the memories of those fortunate enough to experience it.
