The Mairena del Alcor City Council has allocated over 1.1 million euros annually to educational improvements, including shaded areas in playgrounds, climate control, and road safety with a speed limit of 20 km/h.
The Mairena del Alcor City Council has allocated over 1.1 million euros this year to improve public schools in the municipality, an investment that includes the installation of shade structures in playgrounds and the implementation of a speed limit of 20 km/h around school areas. The mayor, Juanma López, accompanied by the councillors for Education and Services, Gloria Guillén and José Romero, has overseen the work at CEIP Isabel Esquivel, where painting and refurbishment work has been carried out.
Over a million euros a year for education
The municipal budget allocated to education amounts to 1,100,000 euros annually, a figure that the mayor has described as a “sustained investment” to ensure equity among schools. Currently, 100% of the schools in Mairena del Alcor have school canteens, climate control systems, and improvements in energy efficiency, according to municipal sources.
The councillor for Education, Gloria Guillén, has detailed the interventions carried out this summer. Among them, the installation of shades in the infant area of CEIP Manuel Romero Arregui, the adaptation of two classrooms at CEIP Antonio González for psychomotricity and library use, and the reform of access to the pavilion at CEIP Juan Caraballo to prevent water leaks stand out.
Additionally, the City Council is working on a plan to provide shaded areas in playgrounds, either through awnings or vegetation, in collaboration with the Junta de Andalucía. Guillén has recalled the previous investment of over one million euros in energy efficiency, subsidised by the Andalusian Energy Agency, which included photovoltaic panels and thermal insulation.
Road safety: speed limit of 20 km/h around schools
In parallel, the City Council has launched an emergency plan to improve road safety around schools. The councillor for Services, José Romero, has announced the installation of signs limiting speed to 20 km/h in the vicinity of all educational centres. “We can put all the protections in place, but if we do not respect the signs, there is little more we can do,” Romero warned, calling for drivers' responsibility.
The maintenance works on access points and the new signage have been carried out over the summer to be ready before the start of the 2025-2026 school year. The councillor has insisted that citizen collaboration is key to protecting minors.
Collaboration with AMPAs and Junta de Andalucía
The government team has thanked the collaboration of the AMPAs of Mairena del Alcor, as well as the institutional support from the Junta de Andalucía, which has co-financed part of the actions. “Once all classrooms are climate-controlled, our goal is to optimise free and recreational spaces,” Guillén pointed out.
For residents, these improvements represent a safer and more comfortable environment for schoolchildren, with playgrounds that will provide protection from the sun and supervised access points. The City Council expects all interventions to be completed before September 10.
