The 17th stage of the Vuelta a España passed through Alcalá de Guadaíra this Wednesday. The mayor, Ana Isabel Jiménez, highlights the national and international visibility that the event brings to the municipality.
Alcalá de Guadaíra was once again in the spotlight this Wednesday with the passage of the 17th stage of the Vuelta a España, an event that the municipality knows well. The race, with a route of 189 kilometres between Dos Hermanas and Seville, entered the town coming from Utrera and Morón de la Frontera.
The peloton, led by Enric Mas (Movistar), travelled along several of Alcalá's main roads, such as Avenida Santa Lucía, Arahal, Antonio Mairena, and Avenida 28 de Febrero. The mayor, Ana Isabel Jiménez, joined the citizens to experience a day she considers key for the municipality's projection.
“The passage of the Vuelta is a unique opportunity for the promotion of the city, which will be seen all over the world. In the 2022 edition, we could see how the images highlighted the city as the peloton passed by, which represents invaluable promotion,” the mayor stated.
This is not the first time Alcalá has been part of the Spanish round's route. In addition to this passage, the municipality has already hosted the event as a start point in 2020 and as a finish point in 2015, and it was also a transit point in 2022.
The City Council activated a special traffic and security operation to ensure the smooth running of the stage and the safety of riders, spectators, and residents. Jiménez has thanked the citizens for their response, who came out to cheer on the cyclists and enjoy the promotional caravan.
“Alcalá is out on the streets today to welcome the cyclists as we know how to do it here, vibing with them and offering our support,” she added.
The mayor also took the opportunity to advocate for the importance of sports in the city, which hosts numerous top-level events throughout the year. Among future projects, she mentioned the construction of a new athletics stadium, which will allow for “hosting major athletic competitions” and meet the demand of local athletes.
The stage, which took place amid the battle for the general classification, left images of Alcalá that were broadcast live to half the world, a showcase that the City Council values as difficult to match with any other promotional action.
