Over 4,000 residents of La Rinconada took to the streets to welcome the seventeenth stage of the Vuelta a España, the flattest of the route with 189 kilometres. The town embraced a day that saw Sinuhé Fernández take the special sprint.
La Rinconada experienced a historic day on Tuesday with the passage of the Vuelta a España 2026. The seventeenth stage, the flattest of the route with 189 kilometres, passed through the municipality in front of more than 4,000 people, according to municipal sources.
The peloton entered La Rinconada from Carmona, passed through the La Jarilla crossing, and travelled down San José Street before taking the A-8001 and exiting via 28 de Febrero Street towards Seville, where the stage concluded.
The most talked-about absence was that of Tadej Pogacar. The Slovenian, a clear leader of the race until his withdrawal due to a fall, could not be in La Rinconada. However, the leader, Enric Mas, and his rival, Primoz Roglic, along with riders such as Ecuadorian Carapaz and Belgian Van Aert, passed through.
Spanish rider Sinuhé Fernández, from Burgos Burpellet BH, won the special sprint located in the municipality ahead of Frenchman Enzo Paleni (Groupama FDJ United). Both were part of the day's breakaway and were the first to enter and exit La Rinconada, although the peloton caught up with them before reaching Seville.
The stage victory went to British rider Matthew Brennan (Visma Team) in a sprint, while Enric Mas (Team Movistar) retained the red leader's jersey for another day.
The mayor of La Rinconada and president of the Provincial Council, who has coordinated with the organisation for the race's passage, followed the stage alongside the Sports Councillor, Francisco José Rodríguez, and the technical director of La Vuelta, former cyclist Fernando Escartín.
"This is a great celebration, a stage that runs entirely through the province and passes through different towns, allowing the people of Seville to see some of the best cyclists of the moment," highlighted the mayor.
The mayor also spoke of the "pride that it brings for one of the three grand tours to cross our municipality in the final stretch, where the final victory begins to brew."
The Vuelta a España 2026 consists of 21 stages and covers a total distance of 3,275 kilometres. It began on August 22 and will conclude on September 13.
