The Alcalá de Guadaíra City Council coordinates with Tragsa and Diputación actions to prevent the Nile Virus. The latest traps have recorded only 50 specimens in peri-urban areas.
The Alcalá de Guadaíra City Council has held a coordination meeting to assess the actions of the Municipal Vector Surveillance and Control Plan (PMVCV) against the West Nile Fever Virus (VFNO). The delegate for Natural Monument, Environment and Sustainability, Luisa Campos, presided over the meeting with technicians from the City Council, the collaborating company Athisa, the Sevilla Diputación, and the Tragsa group.
During the meeting, a review of the work carried out both within the urban core and outside was conducted. According to data provided by Tragsa, which acts on behalf of the Diputación, the points identified as larval breeding sites are checked every fifteen days, and when necessary, a treatment with the biological larvicide BTI (Bacillus Thuringiensis Israelensis) is applied. In the latest review, the peri-urban traps detected only 50 mosquito specimens, a figure that confirms the low incidence in the area.
In the urban area, the Alcalá de Guadaíra City Council has informed the Official Control Reference for VFNO of the reports of actions taken. The municipal plan includes 33 larval control points, excluding drains, for which it has been decided to apply BTI only if they show pooling. Additionally, two BG traps with chemical attractants have been installed, with continuous sampling every 15 days that yields very low capture rates.
Luisa Campos highlighted that these efforts are carried out throughout the locality and intensively in sensitive areas such as wetlands, riverbanks of the Guadaíra, urban parks, and green areas. “In addition to these planning and control meetings, we maintain a year-round follow-up and prevention effort from the Delegation to minimize mosquito breeding sites and reduce the risk to the population,” the delegate noted.
Coordination between administrations is key to this operation. The meeting included Conrado Peinado, Public Health agent; Juan Carlos Rosso, Environmental Health technician from AGS Sevilla Sur; Eduardo Rodríguez, Athisa technician; María Luisa Cabanillas, Diputación technician; and Roberto Muriel, Tragsa group technician. All agreed that continuous monitoring and early treatment of breeding sites are essential to prevent the proliferation of the vector.
The City Council reminds that the surveillance plan is active throughout the year, although it intensifies during the warmer months when the risk of VFNO transmission increases. Residents can help by avoiding the accumulation of stagnant water in pots, buckets, or other outdoor containers, as recommended by municipal technicians.
