The City Council of Seville has transformed 16 streets in the historic centre with an investment of over six million euros, restoring the Gerena cobblestones and renewing infrastructure.
The Urban Planning and Environment Department of the City Council of Seville has completed the transformation of 16 streets in the Old Town, a project that has mobilised over six million euros and aims to restore the traditional image of this environment and improve the lives of residents.
The works have turned these roads into a single platform, restored the Gerena cobblestones, and renewed supply and sewage networks, according to the Urban Planning delegate, Juan De la Rosa.
Among the streets involved are Teodosio, Dueñas, Santa Ángela de la Cruz, San Juan de la Palma, San Leandro, Zaragoza, Méndez Núñez, Castillo Lastrucci, Campana, Martín Villa, Laraña, Imagen, Aponte, Santa Vicenta María, Trajano, and Cuesta del Rosario.
De la Rosa highlighted that “the historic centre of Seville is one of the most important in Spain and deserves streets, materials, and an urban landscape worthy of its history and heritage.” In his opinion, each action aims to “preserve our identity, improve the quality of life for residents, and offer a more cared-for and coherent image to those who live in and visit the city.”
The councillor also criticised the previous management: “for too long, the opportunity to act with a joint vision on the Old Town was lost. Today we are recovering its traditional aesthetics with the Gerena cobblestones, the single platform, lighting more in line with these environments, and urban furniture respectful of Seville’s history.”
One of the most significant actions has been the comprehensive renovation of the streets Santa Ángela de la Cruz, Dueñas, and their surroundings, carried out alongside Emasesa, with an investment exceeding 1.8 million euros. In Teodosio, Santa Ángela de la Cruz, and Dueñas, the urban redevelopment works have surpassed three million euros.
In the commercial streets of Zaragoza and Méndez Núñez, 2.1 and 1.4 million euros have been allocated, respectively, to improve infrastructure and renew aesthetics, incorporating new trees to increase shaded areas.
Cuesta del Rosario has restored its traditional cobblestones and improved the sewage collector with an investment of 155,000 euros. On Aponte street, the sanitation works have concluded with the replacement of asphalt with Gerena cobblestones, costing 60,750 euros.
In Santa Vicenta María, the City Council has allocated 274,302 euros to convert the street into a single platform and enhance the lighting. Additionally, the Campana-Martín Villa-Laraña-Imagen axis has been integrated into the second phase of the segregated bus lane Santa Justa-Plaza del Duque for line TB1.
The ongoing redevelopment of Trajano, currently in progress, has an investment of 2.4 million euros and will transform both the subsoil and the surface of one of the main streets in the Old Town.
The municipal strategy also includes the replacement of 804 light fixtures in 68 streets during 2024, installing Fernandinos lanterns and Santa Cruz models with LED technology. Furthermore, the street signs of Olavide from 1771 are being restored with ceramic tiles, of which 24 pieces have already been placed.
