The Alcalá de Guadaíra City Council has completed the urban development works around the Sanctuary of the Eagle, which include brick paving, orange trees, and fernandina lamps.

The reurbanisation works around the Sanctuary of the Eagle in Alcalá de Guadaíra have concluded after months of intervention. The mayor, Ana Isabel Jiménez Contreras, accompanied by the delegates for Urbanism and Culture, has supervised the work that has transformed the square and its accesses. The project, funded by European Funds, has restored traditional elements such as brick paving and orange trees in tree pits.

Details of the Intervention

The work has included the reduction of the ceramic cladding on the building adjacent to the CIC, replacing it with white mortar to maintain the aesthetics of the area. The access staircase from the esplanade to the Sanctuary has been rehabilitated, and wrought iron railings from the Jesus Nazareno Bridge have been installed, along with fernandina-style lamps. The landscaping has been completed with orange trees, a classic in the locality.

The mayor has highlighted that the intervention is broader than initially planned and completely enhances the square in front of the Sanctuary. “We are preserving a symbolic space for the people of Alcalá,” she stated, emphasising that the project has received unanimous support from the Council of Culture and Heritage.

“It has been an enriching journey in which all members have made their contributions and improvements,” the mayor noted.

Next Steps and Activities

The City Council will take possession of the works in the coming days, just in time for the activities leading up to the Novena. The space will be prepared for the opening of a kiosk-bar that will serve as a meeting point for residents. Additionally, work is being done inside the CIC to install restrooms and an elevator to make the entire building accessible.

The programme includes a summer cinema on August 4 and 5 in the esplanade, and the Velá del Águila organised by the Brotherhood on July 31, August 1 and 2, starting at 21:00, with a bar and live performances. The mayor has encouraged residents to enjoy the space: “We want it to be a lively corner, a public square in a privileged location.”

With this intervention, Alcalá de Guadaíra highlights one of its most emblematic sites, combining tradition and modernity for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.
