The mayor of Osuna, Rosario Andújar, will present an institutional declaration at the full council to demand improvements in the railway service, affected by continuous incidents and delays.
The Osuna Town Council will bring an institutional declaration to the next full council meeting to demand improvements in the Medium Distance train service that connects the town with Seville and Malaga. The mayor, Rosario Andújar, announced this initiative in response to complaints from users who have been experiencing constant delays and stops in recent months.
Andújar pointed out that the railway is an essential service for the region, used daily by workers, students, and patients travelling to the Regional Hospital or the University School. “We are facing quite a few problems with delays and stops that make the journey not as effective and agile as we need it to be,” lamented the mayor.
The institutional declaration seeks the consensus of all municipal political groups to convey a joint claim to the Ministry of Transport and the Junta de Andalucía. Additionally, the mayor has been in contact with the Ministry to present the situation and request the modernisation of the rolling stock.
Andújar reminded that, despite the investments announced by the central government in the line, the positive effects are not being felt in rural areas. “The positive effects that should also be seen in the region, in Osuna and in rural areas, are not being noticed,” she stated. Therefore, the declaration aims to urge that these improvements translate into a reliable service for travellers.
The mayor defended the train as a public transport means, sustainable and respectful of the environment, but warned that current incidents are undermining citizens' trust. “Many citizens are losing faith in this service,” she pointed out.
Among the specific demands, Andújar proposed the creation of a permanent working group with the Ministry to monitor the actions. She also called for an increase in frequencies and for the service between Osuna and Seville to operate with characteristics similar to those of a commuter train. “We also have the right to request that commuter train,” she emphasised.
Regarding ticket prices, the mayor acknowledged that the current discounts from the Ministry make the journey affordable, but she requested that the Junta de Andalucía complement these aids with a regional subsidy. “It is fair, and we must have the same equal opportunities as in other places,” she argued.
The municipal initiative also arises in response to the mobilization of a citizen platform that has demanded improvements in the railway service. The Town Council hopes that the institutional declaration, with the support of all groups, will carry more weight with the competent administrations.
The Medium Distance service is vital for the Osuna region, not only for daily commutes but also for access to health and educational services. Residents of nearby municipalities also use this line to reach the Regional Hospital, which exacerbates the impact of the incidents.
The mayor insisted that modernising the transport vehicle is an urgent necessity and announced that the declaration will include a request for the renewal of the trains operating on the line. The goal is for the service to regain the punctuality and frequency that users demand.
The proposal will be debated at the next municipal full council meeting, and if approved, it will be sent to the Ministry of Transport and the Junta de Andalucía. The Town Council is confident that the unity of all political groups will facilitate a swift response from the administrations.
