Tomares Celebrates the Rosario de la Aurora of its Patroness This Sunday

The Virgin of Sorrows will tour Tomares on Sunday 20th from 7:30. The mass will be at 9:00 in Plaza de la Alegría and collection around 13:00.

The Virgin of Sorrows, Canonical Patroness and Perpetual Mayor of Tomares, will be carried in procession at 7:30 from the Parish of Our Lady of Bethlehem. The mass will be at 9:00 in Plaza de la Alegría and collection is expected around 13:00.

The tradition returns to the streets of Tomares this Sunday 20th September with the Rosario de la Aurora in honour of Our Lady the Virgin of Sorrows, Canonical Patroness and Perpetual Mayor of the locality. The image will leave at 7:30 from the Parish of Our Lady of Bethlehem, carried on shoulders by brothers and devotees, heading towards the Barriada de Peralta.

The procession will be led by the mayor of Tomares, José María Soriano, and the Senior Brother of the Sacramental Brotherhood, Fernando Carlos Rejano Santos. During the route, the Coro de Campanilleros de Tomares will perform.

The town will wake up adorned with banners, hangings, arches, paper flowers, and salt carpets made by the Youth Group of the Sacramental Brotherhood. The procession will arrive at the Plaza de la Alegría, where a mass will be held at 9:00. Afterwards, the Virgin will continue her journey accompanied by the Municipal Band of the Most Holy Christ of Forgiveness of San José de la Rinconada, with collection at her temple around 13:00.

The complete itinerary will pass through streets such as Navarro Caro, de la Viña, de la Uva, Trinidad Reina Ramos, Plaza de la Alegría, José Luis Navarro, Manuel Pinto Caro, Antonio Ortega Rissis, Cristo de la Vera-Cruz, Dr. López Tarruella, Cervantes, Plaza Príncipe de Asturias, Tomás Ibarra, and back to Navarro Caro until the parish.

The preliminary events begin this Tuesday 15th September with a mass in honour of the Virgin at 20:00, presided over by the parish priest Fernando Emilio Borrego Ojeda. There will be a kissing of the Virgin from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 21:00.

On Saturday 19th, at 21:00, the San Benito Youth Band will feature in the traditional Announcing Band, which will depart from the Brotherhood House at calle Tomás Ibarra, 14, and will tour various streets until it reaches the parish, where it will arrive around 22:00.

“This ancient festival, revived in 2014, is one of the most endearing traditions of Tomares,” according to municipal sources.

The Virgin of Sorrows is an anonymous work from the 18th century and the titular image of the Sacramental Brotherhood, founded in 1574 by Franciscan friars. The brotherhood commemorated its 450th anniversary in 2024.
