The Plenary of the City Council of Coria del Río has approved the names of the awardees of the Coriano of the Year 2026, which will be presented on September 4 at the Villa Pastora Soler.
The City Council of Coria del Río has announced the names of the five individuals and entities that will receive the Coriano of the Year 2026 award, the highest municipal distinction, in its eleventh edition. The presentation will take place on Friday, September 4 at 20:30 hours in the Cultural Centre Villa Pastora Soler.
The mayor, Modesto González, explained that the awardees represent very different fields but share their connection to the municipality and the pride of promoting its name. “The Corianos of the Year are a recognition of those who carry the name of our town wherever they go, but also of those who keep our identity and roots alive,” he noted.
In the category of Research, Sciences and Education, the award has gone to Teodora Ortega Díaz, a senior lecturer in the Department of Physical Chemistry at the Faculty of Marine and Environmental Sciences of the University of Cádiz. A Doctor in Chemical Sciences, she researches oceanography and coastal pollution and is part of the Marine Research Institute.
Pilar Cebolla Ramírez has been recognised in the category of Economy, Innovation and Development. A graduate in Business Administration and Management from the University of Seville, she has worked in business management, innovation, and technology companies, with experience in the United States. She is currently the manager of the Andalusian Centre for Molecular Biology and Regenerative Medicine (Cabimer).
In the Culture category, the awardee is Asencio Salas, a graduate in Fine Arts with a career as an actor, visual artist, teacher, and creator that includes more than 80 audiovisual productions. His connection to Coria del Río is reflected in works such as the poster for the 1996 Fair and other designs for the town's cultural life.
Antonio Palma Alfaro receives the award in the category of Sport and Citizenship. Known as “The man with the hoop,” he has revived pedestrarism, a tradition linked to local history that involves exercising with a hoop. After patenting an adapted model, he has undertaken long-distance routes, continuing his family's legacy.
The Special Coriano of the Year has been awarded to the Carpintería de Ribera, a craft linked to the Guadalquivir and the artisanal construction of wooden boats, declared a Good of Cultural Interest. It remains alive in the workshop of Prado de la Magdalena thanks to José Antonio Asián García, “Hachilla”, considered the last craftsman in Andalusia who keeps this trade active.
Interested residents can attend the ceremony on September 4 at the Villa Pastora Soler, where the distinctions will be awarded to the five honourees.
