The young artist from Morón de la Frontera depicts the Virgin of Sorrows with a youthful gaze and a blue background that evokes the municipality's flag. The work was presented at the chapel of the Brotherhood.
La Rinconada now has an image for its Patron Saint Festivities in September. The artist José Luis González Jiménez, originally from Morón de la Frontera, is the author of the announcing poster for the celebrations in honour of Our Lady of Sorrows, Patron and Perpetual Mayor of the municipality. The work was unveiled at the chapel of the Brotherhood of Sorrows.
The event was attended by the delegates of Major Festivities, Rafael Reyes and Silvia Torres, the parish priest of Our Lady of the Snows, Luis María Hernández Villota, as well as representatives of brotherhoods and numerous devotees. The presentation officially opens the month dedicated to the Patron, culminating in the procession on 15 September.
The work, created using mixed media on board and measuring 50 by 70 centimetres, depicts the Virgin dressed in majesty. The face centres a composition in which gold, petals, and blue construct a language rich in religious and local references.
González's relationship with La Rinconada began for personal reasons. It was his partner, Carolina, a native of La Rinconada, who introduced him to the municipality and the devotion to the Virgin. The artist recalls that his first direct contact with the image occurred during a transfer to the parish, and that day left a profound mark on him.
“The first thing I noticed is that the Virgin has a very young appearance. It's something that burned itself into my mind,” explains the poster artist.
This impression led him to study the image on his own, even before receiving the commission. González, who has been part of the crew of Our Lady of Sorrows for several years, finds numerous plastic possibilities in the Virgin's features.
In the poster, the letters are executed in gold leaf, a reference to the Marian litanies and to Mary as Domus Aurea, the house of gold. A rain of petals falls over the image, which, according to the author, represents the prayers of the faithful and connects with the petals received by the Patron every 15 September.
The blue background is the element that gives identity to the work. González establishes a parallelism between the blue of the sky, the conceptionist blue, and that of the flag of La Rinconada, turning the colour into a link between the Virgin and the people. This connection was highlighted by delegate Rafael Reyes, who congratulated the artist for the human simplicity of the face and emphasised the blue of the local flag and the petals as a symbol of the municipality's affection.
Reyes also pointed out that the work, since its presentation, will be part of the heritage of La Rinconada, as a poster for these festivities transcends its announcing function. The month of September continues with the proclamation of the Herald of the Glorious Sorrows and the celebrations in honour of the Patron.
