Gerena hosts the first course for the new Cobre Las Cruces mine

The Cobre Las Cruces Industrial School offers a free metallurgical operations course in Gerena with 300 theoretical hours and 200 practical hours.

The Cobre Las Cruces Industrial School and the Sevilla Chamber of Commerce are accepting registrations until September 30 for a free metallurgical operations course that will be held in Gerena starting October 19.

The Gerena Municipal Training Centre will host the theoretical training for the course “Metallurgical Installation Operations”, an initiative of the Cobre Las Cruces Industrial School and the Business School of the Sevilla Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Gerena Town Hall. Classes will begin on October 19 and the registration period will remain open until September 30.

The programme is free and is aimed at unemployed individuals from surrounding municipalities. It combines 300 hours of theoretical training at the Gerena centre with 200 hours of practical training in companies within the mining and metallurgical sector. Selection will require residency in Gerena, Guillena, Salteras, or La Algaba, proof of unemployment status, and a minimum qualification of Intermediate or Higher Vocational Training (FP1 or FP2) or Baccalaureate.

The mayor of Gerena, María Tenorio, has supported the launch of this first training initiative in the municipality and has linked its usefulness to the opening of the second phase of the Cobre Las Cruces mine. In statements released by the town hall, Tenorio emphasised the need for employment to benefit the local population.

“We advocate for local training and hiring for the mining project,” the mayor stated.

The track record of the Cobre Las Cruces Industrial School supports this type of initiative: since 2014, more than 140 people have passed through its classrooms, with an employability rate of 65%. The new edition will reserve a portion of the places for active workers wishing to improve their employment and will seek to increase the presence of women in the mining and industrial sector.

The selection process will require presenting ID, proof of residency in one of the four municipalities, proof of unemployment, and the required academic qualification.
