The opening of one of the bottom drains of the El Gergal reservoir will raise the water levels of the Huelva river as it passes through Guillena for three days. The operation, carried out by Emasesa, will take place from September 14 to 16 and will start each day at 8:00 AM.
Before activating the drain, the staff from the Seville water company will inspect the riverbed downstream to ensure that there are no people in the area and to inform them of the operation. Upon completion, they will communicate the results to the Local Police and inform them of the start of the operation.
The workers will remain on the Tomás de Ybarra bridge, which crosses the river, until the water levels stabilise. The device aims to prevent incidents in a stretch of riverbed that crosses the municipality.
Emasesa asks the residents of Guillena to exercise extreme caution and refrain from engaging in reckless acts that could endanger their physical safety. This recommendation is repeated each time this type of infrastructure is opened.
The company manages the reservoirs of Aracena, Zufre, La Minilla, Cala, Melonares, and El Gergal, which as of September 13, 2026 stored 76.9% of their capacity. El Gergal was at 84.5%.

The opening will be repeated each of the three scheduled days, always following the same sequence: inspection of the riverbed, notification to the Local Police, and activation of the drain. Information about the status of the reservoirs managed by Emasesa can be consulted on their website.
