The Guillena Town Hall has closed the Alert Level for the West Nile Virus (WNV) that it had maintained since August 18. The declaration was activated after the entomological surveillance system of the Seville Provincial Council confirmed the presence of Culex pipiens mosquitoes carrying the virus in a trap located less than 1.5 kilometres from the urban core.
The General Directorate of Public Health and Pharmaceutical Management of the Ministry of Health and Consumption of the Junta de Andalucía then declared the alert for the municipality, a measure that has been maintained for four consecutive weeks without any new circulation of the virus being detected. The period ended on September 14.
During this time, the Health Area of the Guillena Town Hall reinforced the actions it had already been carrying out since spring as part of the vector mosquito control campaign. Among the measures applied, the frequency of inspections for potential larval breeding sites was increased, and public information campaigns were expanded to reach residents at greater risk.
Vector control measures were also reviewed and expanded, the search for new larval breeding sites or adult refuges was intensified, and communication was established with health services for more active detection of cases in humans.
The municipality remains at a high level, so the Health Area continues with surveillance, control, and treatment actions
Despite the end of the alert, the Guillena Town Hall maintains a high level of vigilance, so control and treatment efforts will continue. The Health Area insists that residents maintain individual prevention measures to avoid bites and the proliferation of mosquitoes.
Recommendations include avoiding water stagnation in ashtrays, containers, drains, and channels, applying bleach in the latter, turning off unnecessary lights in homes, using mosquito nets, and keeping pools and water tanks clean.
The surveillance is part of the Comprehensive Surveillance and Control Program for West Nile Fever Vectors for 2026 of the Junta de Andalucía, which combines human, entomological, and animal monitoring of the virus. The Town Hall has not specified whether new measures will be adopted in the coming weeks.
