The cat sterilization campaign using the CER method in Mairena del Alcor concludes with 99 interventions, preventing the birth of over 400 cats.
The community cat sterilization campaign promoted by the Environment Delegation of the Mairena del Alcor Town Council has closed its balance with 99 interventions carried out during the months of June and July, just one short of the initial target of 100.
The Councillor for the Environment, Ana Guillén, along with the area technician, Vanesa Antúnez, and the representative of the managing entity Sonrisas Peludas, Sara Martínez, presented the results of this initiative which has relied on the altruistic work of the caregivers and volunteers of the local feline colonies.
Of the 99 sterilizations, 44 were males and 55 females. According to Sara Martínez, this action will help control the feline population in the municipality and prevent the unwanted birth of over 400 felines in the coming year.
In addition to sterilizations, the campaign has addressed other essential veterinary needs to improve the quality of life for community cats, including dental extractions, treatment of tumours, and the provision of required medication.
Progress in the municipal ordinance
In regulatory matters, on July 28, the modification of the municipal ordinance regulating feline colonies was brought to the council. This update aims to clarify definitions and key aspects such as the location of feeding points and the authorisations for volunteer caregivers, thus ensuring a more effective and ethical management of population control.
The Environment Delegation has announced that, following the closure of this intervention period, a new campaign with the same objectives will resume in the last months of the year. Additionally, work will continue until the end of the year on standardising feeding points and on awareness actions to promote respect for the CER method and harmonious coexistence between the public and community cats.
