José Luis Sanz has visited the modernisation works of the Macarena complex, which has an investment of 1.17 million euros and a timeline of 12 months.
The comprehensive renovation works of the Begoña Sports Centre, in the Macarena district of Seville, are progressing over the summer with the aim of renewing facilities that have not undergone significant work since the 1980s. The Mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, supervised the work this week, which represents a total investment of 1,171,000 euros.
During the visit, Sanz emphasised that this is “an unprecedented investment in sports facilities, acting comprehensively on a complex that has not seen a major remodel in over four decades.” The project includes the renovation of the multipurpose court (€350,000), the perimeter fencing (€180,000), improvements to the structure and fencing of courts (€60,000), and the installation of new changing rooms (€196,000).
A Complete Renewal for the Neighbourhood
Additionally, the renovation of the grass (€230,000), the installation of LED projectors on the courts (€40,000), cleaning, painting and signage work (€65,000), and preliminary demolitions (€50,000) are planned. The Mayor explained that the aim is “to provide the residents of the Macarena district and users with modern, accessible, efficient, and safe sports facilities.”
The works have a completion timeline of 12 months, after which the complex will feature new spaces, better equipment, and a refreshed image. This initiative is part of the municipal plan for improving sports facilities, which has already seen 21 million euros invested over the last three years.
In this context, José Luis Sanz has criticised the previous management: “The PSOE left us with abandoned sports facilities. We have been working for 3 years to recover them. We have already invested 21 million euros to improve them so that the capital of Andalusia has the facilities that the people of Seville deserve.”
The residents of the Macarena district will be able to enjoy the new facilities once the works are completed, expected next year. In the meantime, the City Council continues to implement improvements in other sports facilities in the city as part of the same plan.
