The Minister of Culture, Patricia del Pozo, has presented the new season of the performance space in Cartuja, which includes 72 performances and 41 companies. Andalusian creation once again takes centre stage with 24 formations from the community.

The Central Theatre of Seville unveiled its programming for the 2026/2027 season this Thursday, a total of 42 shows that will take place over 72 performances. The Minister of Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport of the Junta de Andalucía, Patricia del Pozo, was responsible for presenting an offer that, according to her words, maintains the multidisciplinary and groundbreaking character that has historically defined the theatre of the island of Cartuja.

24 Andalusian companies dominate the programme

Of the 41 companies that make up the lineup, 24 are Andalusian, which represents a significant weight of local creation. Eleven come from the rest of Spain and six are international. The minister highlighted that the new season includes 15 dance proposals, 11 theatre, 9 music, 4 circus, and 3 shows from other performing arts, reflecting the artistic indiscipline that characterises the space.

The season will kick off on 23 October with the premiere in Andalucía of 'El corazón de Ester', by the Málaga-born Alberto Cortés. Before that, between 11 September and 2 October, the theatre will host 9 shows from the XXIV Biennial of Flamenco. The Andalusian programming will extend until May 2027, featuring names such as Mario Bermúdez, winner of the Andalucía Culture Award for Performing Arts 2025, who will premiere 'Pueblo' on 30 and 31 October.

"The new programming maintains the multidisciplinary and groundbreaking character that has historically defined the Central Theatre," stated Patricia del Pozo during the presentation.

Dance, theatre and circus for all audiences

The Andalusian scene will continue in November with the premiere of 'Brabant', by Proyecto Lorca and Enrique del Castillo, and 'El discurso', by Rosa Romero. Also notable are the two theatrical proposals by Alessandra García: 'Mujer en cinta de correr sobre fondo negro' and '¿Tú sabes lo que es una posidonia?'. In December, Migue López will premiere 'Un bostezo melancólico de la tierra', while Truca Circus will bring 'Alboroto' to family audiences.

January will bring 'Gaze', by Bea Lamadrid, and 'Dysphoria', by Histrión Teatro. As a novelty, the Central Theatre will present 'Zappa' on 29 and 30 January, a project that will bring together the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville and the Andalusian musician Daahoud Salim around the universe of Frank Zappa. The programming will be completed with events such as 'Poemas para un cuerpo en movimiento', by Andrés Marín and Juan Domínguez, and 'Occupy Bernarda', by Bárbara Sánchez, in February.

National and international presence

The national scene will be represented by names such as Andrés Lima and Teatro del Barrio, who will present the musical theatre 'Libres!!!' on 5 and 6 December. The Catalan company Mal Pelo will bring 'WE. Nosotros y los tiempos', and LaJoven will represent 'Un monstruo viene a verme' in January. In February, Israel Elejalde and Teatro Kamikaze will stage 'El nudo Gordiano'.

On the international front, Belgian choreographer Jan Martens will present 'The dog days are over 2.0' in November. South African choreographer Mamela Nyamza, recent winner of the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale, will visit the Seville theatre for the first time with 'Hatched Ensemble' on 15 and 16 January. The presence of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is also noteworthy.

A bridge to the new direction

The 2026/2027 season has been designed under the premise of continuity by the team of the Andalusian Agency for Cultural Institutions and aims to serve as a bridge between the stage of Manuel Llanes and the new project that will be directed by Córdoba's Elena Carmona Sanjuán, winner of the selection process. The theatre thus reaffirms its commitment to creation, production, and mediation with the audiences.

For lovers of the performing arts, the season kicks off on 23 October and will run until May 2027. Tickets will soon be available for purchase on the theatre's website and at the box office. An opportunity to enjoy the creative effervescence of Andalucía without leaving Cartuja.
