The City Council of Seville has removed the monument to Rodrigo de Triana this Wednesday from the Plaza Virgen de la Milagrosa to reproduce it in bronze and ensure its preservation against the deterioration of the original piece, created by José Lemus.
Municipal workers have removed the monument to Rodrigo de Triana from the Plaza Virgen de la Milagrosa, in the Triana neighbourhood. The piece, created by the Sevillian sculptor José Lemus and made of artificial stone in the 1970s, was showing significant deterioration, prompting the City Council of Seville to opt for a bronze reproduction, a material that will ensure its longevity.
The bronze reproduction will be reinstalled in the Plaza Virgen de la Milagrosa, while the original piece will be relocated to another point in the Triana neighbourhood. Simultaneously, the City Council is carrying out the reorganisation and improvement of the entire square, which will include a rose of winds to give greater prominence to the sculpture once it is replaced.
The intervention will be completed with a new pedestal that will elevate the sculpture and the installation of an ornamental lighting system that will enhance its artistic and symbolic value. These actions are part of a series of improvements in the area of calle Pagés del Corro, the main artery of the neighbourhood, which complement the works currently being carried out by Emasesa in this street.
The works by Emasesa in Pagés del Corro, which also include Victoria and Luca de Tena, focus on the replacement of supply, sanitation, and washing networks, and involve the renewal of the pavement and the construction of wider sidewalks to comply with current accessibility legislation. The second phase of the works on Pagés del Corro covers the stretch between calle Farmacéutico Murillo Herrera and calle Victoria.
The total investment for these interventions amounts to 7,779,376 euros and is executed in coordination with the Urban Planning Management of the City Council of Seville. The works also redistribute parking and tree pits and enhance the tree cover of this main street in the neighbourhood. The widths of the roadway will allow for two-way traffic and, in certain areas, one-way traffic. Parking will be in line, and the rest, up to the façade, will be left for the sidewalks, which will gain space for pedestrians.
Among the planned actions in the vicinity of Pagés del Corro, the restoration and adaptation of the compass of the Church of San Jacinto stands out. These works include improving the front space of the parish by remodelling the square, preserving its current aesthetic of exposed brick and maintaining the existing ceramic panels. Deteriorated tiles will be replaced, and those that are missing will be restored, ensuring the preservation of the heritage value of the ensemble.
Additionally, the pavement of the compass will be restored with the placement of new tiles in homage to the brotherhoods that originated in this parish. The insignias of the Brotherhood of Esperanza de Triana, the Estrella, the Aguas, and the Rocío de Triana, which began their activities in San Jacinto, will be represented in this renewed space. The action will be completed with the replacement of the current enclosure with a new one that matches the remodelled environment, as well as the removal of the remains of the existing stump.
Finally, the City Council will carry out the reurbanisation of calle Gustavo Bacarisas, a pedestrian street that connects Pagés del Corro with calle Génova. The project includes a comprehensive repair of the sidewalk, the adaptation of the access area to the existing parking, the reorganisation of spaces designated for motorcycle parking, and the improvement of the flowerbeds. Furthermore, the organisation of the monoliths located on this street will be carried out, improving the urban image and pedestrian mobility.
