The City Council invests €394,101 in the historic Nervión school to eliminate damp issues. The action is part of a plan that includes works in 49 educational centres.
The Mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, supervised on Wednesday the comprehensive works being carried out at CEIP Borbolla, the century-old school in the Nervión district. The intervention, budgeted at €394,101.20, aims to definitively resolve the damp issues affecting the building, which is listed as a Cultural Heritage Site (BIC).
The works include damp-proofing treatment for the vertical surfaces of the main building and the perimeter, as well as the installation of new systems for collecting and directing rainwater from the tiled roofs. This water will be connected to the existing sewer network in the courtyards and, in the right wing, also to the public road network.
The action, framed within the City Council of Seville's Public School Improvement Plan, also includes the partial replacement of sections of the drainage in the courtyards affected by root intrusion, sealing joints between pavements and surfaces, and cleaning the perimeter rainwater collection channel.
In the administration area, stabilized cracks and fissures will be repaired, and painting will be renewed in various zones. Silicate paint will be applied to the vertical interior surfaces and plastic paint on the horizontal surfaces throughout the ground floor, except in the former caretaker's residence. The first and second floors of the main building and the first floor of the administrative area will also be painted.
CEIP Borbolla, designed by architect Juan Talavera Heredia, opened its doors in 1923 and currently has around 450 students. This new intervention adds to the renovation of its sports facilities, completed in 2024 with an investment of €84,770, bringing the total investment in this centre in recent times to nearly half a million euros.
“The main objective of this intervention is to definitively solve the damp issues affecting the centre and improve the quality and health conditions of its facilities,” stated José Luis Sanz during the visit.
The City Council is currently undertaking works in 49 public schools worth over €5.6 million. Of these, 40 will see their works completed before the start of the school year, which begins next week. In addition to these works, there are €9.5 million in projects in the drafting phase, nearly €10 million in completed actions, and over €950,000 in projects under processing.
“All of this adds to the more than €25 million that we have invested and are investing over these three years in renewing public schools in Seville,” highlighted the mayor.
With this comprehensive action, the City Council aims to provide a global solution to the damp problems of CEIP Borbolla, improve its water drainage and sanitation systems, and ensure the preservation of a building of special historical and heritage value for the city.
