The mayor of Sevilla, José Luis Sanz, has been designated by the National Electoral Committee of the PP as the candidate for re-election in the municipal elections of 2027, highlighting the promotion of protected housing as the main achievement of his term.
The mayor of Sevilla, José Luis Sanz, will run again as the Popular Party candidate for the mayoralty of the Andalusian capital in the municipal elections of 2027. This has been confirmed by the National Electoral Committee of the PP, which designated him along with the other candidates for provincial capitals at an event held this weekend in Santiago de Compostela, attended by the party leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo.
A city that "advances" against the previous "blockage"
Sanz, who took office on June 17, 2023, has defended his management during these three years of government. "Sevilla was a completely abandoned, blocked and paralysed city after eight years of socialist government," he declared during his speech in Santiago. The mayor invited attendees to discover "the dynamic Sevilla of today", in contrast to the legacy received.
The main argument for his candidacy is the boost to the construction of protected housing. According to data provided by the mayor, more than 7,000 protected homes have been initiated during his term, compared to just 83 that were started in the eight years of socialist government. "Sevilla is today the Andalusian capital of protected housing," he emphasised.
"Sevilla is on the move, Sevilla is advancing. It has recovered lost time and once again has a horizon of opportunities where there was once only blockage," Sanz stated.
The challenge of retaining the mayoralty in 2027
The municipal elections will be held in May 2027. The PP is confident in retaining the Andalusian capital, which Sanz took from the PSOE in 2023 with 132,745 votes (compared to the 110,242 of the socialists). The party managed to gain six more seats compared to 2019, allowing it to govern in a minority.
"In these three years we have shown that Sevilla can function better, but we still have a long way to go," Sanz acknowledged, expressing his intention to "continue building it together with all Sevillans" from the mayoralty. The mayor also lamented the investment deficit from the central government in the city, although he did not go into details about possible budget agreements.
For the residents of Sevilla, Sanz's re-election would mean the continuation of a policy focused on streamlining licenses, promoting affordable housing, and economic reactivation, although the mayor still needs to specify his programme for the next term. For now, the PP has already begun mobilising its base in the province, with events planned in the coming months to promote the candidacy.
The opposition, for its part, has already criticised Sanz's management regarding cleanliness, public transport, and infrastructure maintenance, although the mayor remains optimistic about the elections. "Sevilla is advancing," he has insisted, in a message he will repeat during the campaign.
