The Virgen del Castillo Association of Relatives and Alzheimer’s Patients is organising workshops, early detection tests, and the XII Alzheimer’s March with the support of the Lebrija Town Hall.
The Plaza de España in Lebrija hosted the central event of World Alzheimer’s Day this Monday, September 21, a gathering that brought together representatives from the local associative fabric and the municipal corporation. During the day, the manifesto of the Virgen del Castillo Association of Relatives and Alzheimer’s Patients was read, which this year carries the slogan “NO is no longer an answer”, chosen by the Spanish Confederation of Alzheimer’s and other Dementias (CEAFA).
The text advocates for more investment in research, public prevention policies, and access to new therapies that can slow the progression of the disease in certain patients. The Lebrija association also supported the demands of CEAFA and CONFEAFA, as well as the position of the Andalusian Society of Neurology regarding access to new treatments.
The mayor of Lebrija spoke to remind everyone that this day serves to raise awareness of a disease that affects millions of people worldwide and, above all, to not lose sight of the fact that behind each diagnosis is a person, a family, and a story. He also acknowledged the work of caregivers and family members, whose support he deemed essential for improving the quality of life of those affected.
“NO is no longer an answer”
The centre’s director, Lucía Fuentes, emphasised the social dimension of Alzheimer’s and its impact on both those diagnosed and their families and caregivers. A user of the association took the floor to defend her right to be heard, to receive good care, and to access necessary treatments, concluding her speech by highlighting that her voice is very important.
The association serves over fifty users through services such as a day centre, cognitive stimulation, physiotherapy and psychomotricity, occupational therapy, social and psychological care, neuropsychological follow-up and evaluation, transport, orientation therapy, and nursing services.
The programme will continue this Tuesday, September 22, with the workshop “Healthy Back and Meditation” for caregivers, at 11:00 hours in the Casa de la Cultura. Pre-registration can be done by calling 955 973 346. On the same day, at 18:00 hours, the Day Centre, located next to the San Francisco car park, will open its doors to the public.
On Wednesday 23 and Friday 25 September, early detection tests will be conducted at the Day Centre, also by appointment at the same phone number. On Thursday 24, at 11:00 hours, the Casa de la Cultura will host the conference “Advances in Alzheimer’s Disease Research”, led by José Luis Cantero, professor of Physiology and director of the Functional Neuroscience Laboratory at Pablo de Olavide University.
The final highlight will come on Friday September 25 with the XII Alzheimer’s March, which will start at 20:00 hours from the Plaza de España. This solidarity event will once again bring together families, groups, and citizens to show their support for those affected and their families.
