The XII Solidarity Popular Race 'Ciudad de Tomares' will be held on Sunday, October 25, to benefit the association 'A Warrior Named Darío'. All proceeds will go towards research on the mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome that this 9-year-old boy from Tomares suffers from.
The Town Hall of Tomares and the Marathon Club Tomares have organized the XII Solidarity Popular Race 'Ciudad de Tomares' 2026 Memorial Esteban Martínez Edo, which will take place on Sunday, October 25. This year's sporting event has a clear beneficiary: the association 'A Warrior Named Darío', created by Ana, the boy's mother.
Darío is a 9-year-old boy from Tomares diagnosed with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, an ultra-rare disease that affects only two children in Spain (the other one resides in Menorca) and around twenty worldwide. The association bearing his name raises funds to support research into this condition and other mitochondrial diseases.
The funds raised will be allocated to the scientific team MITOCURE, led by Dr. José Antonio Sánchez Alcázar, a professor at Pablo de Olavide University (UPO) and head of the Andalusian Centre for Developmental Biology (CABD). This group is working on finding treatments for the syndrome and associated pathologies.
The event has the collaboration of around twenty local companies and entities, including DOC (Community Sport and Leisure), David Lloyd Clubs, Comprarcasa, IN MUV Sport Clinic, Puerto Tomares, El Arca de Noé, DU, Fundación 1890 Sevilla FC, BROOKS, Seville Provincial Council, Frutería Las Cuatro Esquinas, Las Dos y Pico, Real Betis Balompié, KIA Mobility Aljarafe, Deporte Manía, Floristería María Luisa, Molino de Nava, and Scientific Nutrition.
Registrations will remain open until October 22 through the Gesconchip platform or via the QR code provided by the organization. All proceeds will be fully donated to the association.

The race will kick off on Sunday, October 25 in Tomares. Organizers remind that citizen participation is key for research to progress and for other children with mitochondrial diseases to benefit from the treatments developed.
