Bajo Guadalquivir has been one of the only two Spanish territories selected in Airbnb's 'Rural Commitment' programme, with funding of nearly two million dollars for six tourism projects.
The rural development entity ADELQUIVIR has achieved significant international support for Bajo Guadalquivir. The Airbnb platform has selected its application within the 'Rural Commitment' programme, endowing it with around two million dollars. It is one of only two Spanish territories to benefit in this first edition.
ADELQUIVIR's proposal was chosen from 37 applications across Spain. The aim of the programme is to promote decentralised and responsible tourism in rural areas. The funding will be allocated to six strategic actions aimed at transforming the region's tourism offer, generating employment, and retaining the population.
Among the most notable projects is the creation of an Olive Tourism Centre in Los Molares. A historic building will also be rehabilitated for tourist accommodation linked to Bodegas Halcón. In Lebrija, the Hostal Mellizo will be expanded and renovated. Additionally, a Unit for Active Tourism and Wellbeing will be launched.
Another action is the recovery of the Torre del Homenaje of the Castle of Las Aguzaderas, in El Coronil. The ornithological environment of the Pantano de la Torre del Águila, in El Palmar de Troya, will also be improved to promote sustainable tourism linked to nature.
ADELQUIVIR will also lead a project that will serve as a backbone for the entire region, which includes the creation of a regional tourism brand and a digital platform that integrates all offerings. Cultural, natural, and Jacobean routes will be signposted and adapted, and joint promotional actions will be carried out to position Bajo Guadalquivir as a cohesive destination.
Particular emphasis will be placed on enhancing the Santiago de Compostela routes of Bajo Guadalquivir. Rest areas and interpretive panels will be installed in collaboration with the Friends of the Camino de Santiago Association of Utrera. This route is one of the main heritage and tourism axes of the area.
The president of ADELQUIVIR, José Ángel Martínez Fernández, highlighted that "this selection represents recognition of the work we have been developing alongside the municipalities of Bajo Guadalquivir and demonstrates that territorial cooperation is the best tool to build an innovative, sustainable rural development model that generates opportunities."
The application stems from the work of the Tourism Table of Bajo Guadalquivir, created by ADELQUIVIR in March of this year. This cooperation forum among municipalities has allowed for the collection of proposals and the design of a shared tourism strategy. For the residents of the region, these projects will mean new employment and business opportunities, as well as an improvement in tourism services.
The timelines for the execution of the actions have not yet been detailed, but they are expected to begin in the coming months. Airbnb's funding will provide a significant boost to a territory seeking to diversify its economy beyond agriculture.
