Hundreds of residents of Tomares filled the Town Hall Square this Wednesday to show their solidarity with Ceuta. The event, presided over by Mayor José María Soriano, included the reading of a manifesto agreed unanimously in the Ceuta Assembly.
The Town Hall of Tomares hosted a mass gathering in support of Ceuta on Wednesday 2nd September to mark Ceuta Day. Hundreds of residents packed the Town Hall Square to support a call from the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP).
The mobilization was led by the Mayor of Tomares, José María Soriano, accompanied by his Government Team and the municipal groups of VOX and PSOE. During the event, the flags of Ceuta and Spain were displayed, and the official anthems of both cities were played.
Under the slogan “Together and united, Ceuta does not surrender. Ceuta defends itself”, attendees chanted slogans such as “Long live Ceuta! Long live Spain!”. The central moment was the reading of a manifesto that literally reproduces the Institutional Declaration approved on 28th August by the Board of Spokespersons of the Ceuta Assembly.
This agreement was unanimously signed by all groups represented in the autonomous city: Popular Party, PSOE, VOX, MDyC, and Ceuta Ya. The text, read in Tomares, denounces the situation in Ceuta following the illegal entry of nearly 80,000 people through the Tarajal border.
The declaration describes a city “plunged into a critical situation, on the brink of collapse” and demands that the National Government take immediate action to “restore normality.” Among the measures requested are the return of those who participated in the mass entry, the reinforcement of the Security Forces, and the repair of damages to the productive fabric.
The manifesto also categorically rejects any violence and emphasizes that “the defense of Ceuta and the interests of Ceutíes can only be carried out within the framework of legality, responsibility, and respect for coexistence.” The text concludes with the slogan “Together and united, Ceuta does not surrender, Ceuta defends itself”.
The gathering in Tomares thus adds to the mobilizations called in various parts of Spain to express solidarity with the people of Ceuta and demand a solution to the migration crisis affecting the autonomous city since late July.
