La Rinconada City Council has awarded TG4 Consultores AEC the drafting of the project to rehabilitate the San Francisco Javier building. The new facilities, covering 359.75 square metres, will replace the current centre on Manuel de Rodas street.
The La Rinconada City Council has signed the contract with TG4 Consultores AEC to draft the rehabilitation and energy improvement project for the San Francisco Javier building, which will house the new Cognitive Stimulation Centre. The signing took place this Monday, coinciding with World Alzheimer’s Day, commemorated on September 21.
Present at the event were the mayor, Javier Fernández; the deputy mayors and heads of Agenda 2030, Urban Habitat and Social Welfare, Raquel Vega, José Manuel Romero Campos and Mercedes Bueno, respectively; the secretary of the Alzheimer Association AFA La Vega, Nuria Diestro del Barco, and staff from the awarded company.
The new centre will be located at Carretera Nueva nº 42, in the iconic San Francisco Javier building, constructed in the 1960s and previously home to the Post Office and the Cerro Macareno centre. The facilities will replace the current centre on Manuel de Rodas street and will expand services for people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or cognitive impairment, their families, and citizens interested in prevention.
The project covers 359.75 square metres and will include four workrooms, a multipurpose room, a digital room, a family respite room, four offices, storage, restrooms, and changing rooms. Outdoors, a patio will be created for outdoor activities, gardening areas, relaxation spaces, and sustainable drainage systems to reuse rainwater for irrigation.
In terms of accessibility, a ramp with a gentler slope and wider sidewalks are planned, gaining space for pedestrians. The facade and roof renovation will include photovoltaic panels with an estimated production of 6,000 kWh annually, which will reduce CO2 emissions by 76% and achieve a 75.6% reduction in non-renewable primary energy consumption.
The mayor highlighted the social nature of the initiative. "Today is a fundamental day for our municipality. The signing of this contract reaffirms this City Council's commitment to the care, well-being, and dignity of Alzheimer’s patients and their families," declared Javier Fernández.
"Transitioning from the current facilities to this new building will mark a before and after in the quality of care. We are providing the Alzheimer Association of La Vega and families with almost 360 modern, fully adapted, bright square metres with outdoor spaces for workshops and respite therapies," added the mayor.
This operation is part of the Integrated Action Plan (PAI) of La Rinconada 'LR2030 Connected City' and is co-financed 85% by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and 15% by the City Council. The initial investment amounts to €607,739.
The 'Connected City' plan has attracted around €10 million in ERDF funds through the Local Integrated Development Strategy (EDIL) and includes other projects such as the completion of the Green Ring bike lane, the construction of smart bike parking, the acquisition of electric buses, digital platforms to monitor public transport and manage energy consumption, neighbourhood regeneration works, an active ageing centre, a therapeutic swimming pool, the 'City of Racket', and the rehabilitation of the cultural centre of La Villa and the El Cáñamo building to host the cultural centre 'La Fábrica'.
With this step, the La Rinconada City Council begins the process for the works to be tendered once the project is drafted. Local residents will have adapted and sustainable facilities for the care of neurodegenerative diseases.
