The La Rinconada Town Hall has completed the comprehensive renovation of the Antonio Romero Sports Centre, 'El Negro', with an investment of nearly €280,000. The works have renewed the tennis courts, the five-a-side football pitch, the multipurpose court, and replaced the padel courts with two pickleball courts.
The Antonio Romero Sports Centre, 'El Negro', in La Rinconada, is now operational again after a comprehensive renovation that had a budget of around €280,000, funded by the Sports Department of the La Rinconada Town Hall.
The works included the renovation of the two tennis courts and the multipurpose court, the replacement of the artificial grass on the five-a-side football pitch, and the substitution of the padel courts with two pickleball courts, an emerging sport that already has a club in the municipality and required its own space for training.
Additionally, the outer perimeter fence has been replaced and the entire facility has been painted. The mayor, Javier Fernández, along with the Public Works delegate, José Manuel Romero Campos, and the Sports delegate, Francisco José Rodríguez, recently visited the facility to assess the results.
"Alongside this comprehensive renovation of the 'El Negro' sports centre, we are adding others such as the renovation of the 'Castañita' swimming pool, where the entrance to San José has been modernised via El Malecón, covered padel courts in the 'Annex to the Covered Pool', or changes to the flooring in 'El Santísimo', because it is equally important to grow with new facilities as it is to maintain the existing ones in good condition," highlighted the mayor.
For his part, the Public Works delegate emphasised the technical quality of the intervention: "We have carried out a comprehensive action that includes the external enclosure and the aesthetic adaptation of the entire facility. This guarantees the durability of the equipment, the safety of users, and the improvement of the urban environment in the area."
The Sports delegate, Francisco José Rodríguez, valued the response to community demands and the municipality's projection: "We listen to local clubs and athletes; the adaptation of the space for pickleball practice demonstrates our commitment to emerging sports in La Rinconada. Having a network of modern, accessible, and well-maintained facilities is the fundamental pillar that supports and strengthens our candidacy for European City of Sport in 2028."
This action adds to other recent improvements in the municipality's sports facilities. A year ago, the summer pool of the same complex expanded its grassy areas, renovated the picnic areas, and improved the pool beach, with an investment of €325,000 from the state program PFEA in its 'Stable' modality.
With this renovation, the residents of La Rinconada regain a key sports space for practicing tennis, futsal, pickleball, and other activities. The sports centre is now open to the public during its usual hours.
