The Ministry of Equality has confirmed a new gender-based murder in Mairena del Aljarafe (Seville), raising the number of fatalities to 25 so far in 2026. The woman, aged 44, was found dead from stab wounds and her partner, also injured, is believed to have self-harmed.

The Ministry of Equality confirmed on Monday a new case of gender violence that occurred on Saturday, June 27, in the Seville town of Mairena del Aljarafe, bringing the number of women murdered due to gender violence in Spain during 2026 to 25. The victim, aged 44, was allegedly killed by her partner, also 44, inside a home in the municipality.

The Civil Guard found the woman's lifeless body with stab wounds. In the same residence, officers located the man, who had injuries consistent with self-harm. He was taken to a healthcare facility in Seville, where he remains hospitalised. No prior reports of gender violence had been filed against the alleged aggressor, according to the department led by Ana Redondo.

With this new crime, the number of minors orphaned due to gender violence rises to 13 in 2026 and to 523 since 2013, the year when records began. The victim had a minor child.

Andalusia ranks as the autonomous community with the highest number of gender-based murders this year, with six victims. It is followed by the Valencian Community (four); Aragón, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, Madrid, and Navarra (two each); and Cantabria, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, Extremadura, and Galicia (one each).

Data from the Government Delegation against Gender Violence reveals that 16 of the 25 murders (64%) had no prior reports, highlighting the difficulty in detecting these cases before they occur. Additionally, in six of these cases (24%), the alleged aggressor committed suicide after the crime.

The year 2026 records the worst figures for gender violence since 2023, with 25 women murdered by the end of June. In 2023, there were 26 murders in total for the year, a figure that has nearly been reached in the first half of this year.

Since 2003, when official data collection began, a total of 1,366 women have been murdered due to gender violence in Spain. The case in Mairena del Aljarafe adds to a long list of femicides that highlight the persistence of this social scourge.

The Ministry of Equality has condemned the incident and urged institutions to strengthen protection mechanisms. The Government Delegation against Gender Violence reminds that the phone number 016, the email 016-online@igualdad.gob.es, and the WhatsApp service at 600 000 016 provide 24-hour assistance.
