Seville City Council and the Official College of Pharmacists of Seville are launching a campaign with posters and leaflets in the city's pharmacies to prevent the West Nile virus.
Seville City Council and the Royal and Illustrious Official College of Pharmacists of Seville have initiated an informational campaign to strengthen prevention against the West Nile virus, after cases have been detected in the capital.
Under the slogan 'Advice to Avoid the Transmission of the West Nile Virus in Seville', the initiative will distribute posters and leaflets in the city's pharmacies with personal and domestic protection measures to prevent bites and curb the proliferation of mosquitoes.
The delegate for Public Space and Animal Protection, José Lugo, explained that this action aims to "involve the entire Sevillian society" and thanked the collaboration of the pharmacists' college for "raising awareness about prevention" and preventing the spread of the virus.
For her part, the secretary of the Official College of Pharmacists of Seville, Rosalía García, highlighted the role of pharmacies as accessible health information points. "Pharmacies are present in all neighbourhoods and their professionals can help resolve citizens' doubts about prevention measures and the proper use of repellents," she noted.
García emphasized that not all repellents are suitable for everyone and should be used according to the manufacturer's instructions. The pharmacist can advise on the most appropriate product based on the age and circumstances of each user, as well as explain how to apply it correctly.
Five Areas of Prevention
The leaflets organise recommendations into five blocks: avoid stagnant water, protect the body, apply repellents correctly, use physical barriers, and adopt measures indoors.
Among the advice is the use of approved repellents and loose, light-coloured clothing, long sleeves, and long trousers, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. It is also advised to avoid outdoor activities during these times and to stay away from flooded areas.
The materials remind that repellents should always be used according to the label and avoid application on irritated skin or wounds. Additionally, it is recommended to install mosquito nets on doors and windows and to protect cribs, strollers, and baby carriers outdoors.
Indoors, it is suggested to turn off unnecessary lights, use insecticides or diffusers according to instructions, and keep spaces clean and ventilated.
Citizen Collaboration
The campaign pays special attention to the elimination of stagnant water. It is recommended to periodically empty and clean plant saucers, buckets, toys, waterers, and other outdoor containers, as well as to maintain pools, washbasins, sinks, drainage areas, pipes, and drains in good condition.
The posters encourage collaboration with authorities and reporting potential mosquito breeding sites, such as water accumulations or abandoned pools. Reports can be made to the Seville City Council via phone 010 or email plagassanitarias@sevilla.org.
