Sevilla FC has put a price on their Swiss winger Rubén Vargas: 20 million euros, not a penny less. The Nervión club is not willing to lower that figure, and the World Cup that the player participated in with Switzerland —where he reached the quarter-finals— has helped sustain a valuation that exceeds his market value, estimated at around 15 million. The operation, which the club considers key to easing their wage bill and financing summer reinforcements, has attracted the interest of Borussia Dortmund, who have already made contact to understand the player's situation.
The German side, Bundesliga runners-up and qualified for the upcoming Champions League, is looking to rebuild their flanks following the departures of Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Karim Adeyemi —the latter transferred to FC Barcelona for 22 million plus variables—. Vargas' profile fits that need, although from the player's camp, it is noted that, for now, there is no formal offer on the table. Dortmund is considering making a proposal in the coming days, but Sevilla maintains its stance: 20 million, non-negotiable.
Vargas, 27, joined Sevilla in January 2025 from Augsburg, where he played for five and a half seasons. Since then, he has played 36 matches in the white and red shirt, scoring 5 goals and providing 7 assists. His versatility to play on both flanks and also centrally is one of the aspects most valued by Luis García Plaza's coaching staff. His contract runs until June 2029, which strengthens the club's negotiating position.
The World Cup has been the ultimate showcase for Vargas. In five matches, the winger scored two goals and provided one assist, being one of Switzerland's standout players in the tournament. His performance, which ended on July 11 with a defeat against Argentina in extra time, has skyrocketed his valuation and placed his name on the agendas of several European clubs. Before Dortmund's interest, Tottenham, Aston Villa, West Ham, and Turkish Trabzonspor had already shown interest, although the latter option does not appeal to the player, who prioritises a destination with a ticket to the Champions League. Vargas' departure is not a whim, but an economic necessity for Sevilla. The club has long been under a salary cap imposed by LaLiga and needs to raise funds to balance the books and operate in the market. The transfer of the Swiss, close to 20 million, would provide immediate financial relief and allow the sporting management, led by Antonio Cordón, to operate with flexibility in signing a replacement. Additionally, the club is also looking to transfer Chidera Ejuke, a Nigerian winger in the last year of his contract, from whom they hope to obtain a profit of between three and four million. Meanwhile, the technical secretariat is already working on the replacement. The sought profile is that of a fast and dynamic winger for the flanks, and the preferred method is a loan, as the club does not contemplate permanent signings for those positions. The priority name is Bryan Zaragoza, although the operation is contingent on the income generated.
