Several tenants of the Corralones on Castellar Street have allegedly been assaulted by employees of Desokupaciones García Seguridad Integral. At least two of them had to be taken to hospital.
The residents of the emblematic Corralones on Castellar Street, in the heart of Seville's Old Town, have reported a new violent assault by the company Desokupaciones García Seguridad Integral. According to the collective profile Defiende Los Corralones on Instagram, at least two people had to be treated at a hospital following the events that occurred on Friday, May 24.
The images shared by the collective show several residents with bleeding wounds on their faces, which has caused strong outrage among the residents and supporters of these historically and socially significant buildings. The company, hired by the owners of the complex, Garaje Santa Inés SL, is said to have a history of such actions, according to the affected parties.
This is not the first time incidents of this nature have occurred. Weeks ago, the same company reportedly entered some of the premises and assaulted tenants with blows, theft of belongings, and pepper spray. On that occasion, they also sprayed a journalist from Espacio Andaluz and a photographer from ABC who were covering the events.
Despite the escalation of violence, the mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, and the City Council, governed by the Popular Party, maintain a stance that residents consider passive. Municipal sources consulted have limited themselves to stating that "this is a matter of public safety and the National Police must respond to it."
The City Council had previously considered the possibility of expropriating the land due to its historical value, but to date, no concrete measures have been implemented. Residents are calling for urgent action to stop what they consider a campaign of harassment and demolition.
The Corralones de Castellar are a set of popular housing with over a century of history, declared of heritage interest. Their preservation and the right to housing for their tenants have generated a broad support movement in the city.
So far, the National Police has not commented on the events, and there has been no response from Desokupaciones García regarding the accusations. Residents have announced that they will file a formal complaint and will continue to mobilise to protect their home.
