The Velá de Santa Ana Commission has decided to recognise journalist José Antonio Rodríguez as Trianero del Año, closing a year filled with professional achievements in which Triana has been the protagonist.
Sevillian journalist José Antonio Rodríguez, who delivered the proclamation of the Holy Week of Seville on March 22 at the Teatro de la Maestranza, adds a new award to his brilliant career. The Velá de Santa Ana Commission has agreed to name him Trianero del Año, an honour that will be presented during the neighbourhood festivities in honour of Santa Ana.
Rodríguez, a costalero of the Esperanza de Triana and a member of other brotherhoods from the district such as La Estrella and the Pastora de Triana, has experienced a particularly intense 2026. His proclamation, which he dedicated largely to the old district, was carried out on shoulders from the Teatro de la Maestranza, as sources from the organisation recalled.
A true Trianero by heart and birth
Although he was born in San Julián and raised in Gines, Triana has always been Rodríguez's neighbourhood. His maternal family is from there, and most of the brotherhoods he belongs to are based in the neighbourhood. His proclamation for Holy Week, which captivated Seville, had Triana as the undisputed protagonist.
The journalist is no stranger to the Velá de Santa Ana. In 2017, he was the one to proclaim the festival on its first day, and his face is a common sight on Calle Betis during those days, as highlighted by the organising committee.
A career linked to communication and brotherhoods
José Antonio Rodríguez worked in the communication office of the president of the Junta de Andalucía until just a few months ago and currently works as a journalist at Canal Sur Televisión. Previously, he participated in several brotherhood programmes on the now-defunct Sevilla Televisión and Tele Sevilla, and has collaborated with Pasión en Sevilla and El Llamador.
Additionally, he has dabbled in the film world: he starred in the movie Juan de Mesa. From Oblivion to the Great Power and worked behind the scenes on The Dream of the Awakened or The Christ of the Compass.
The preacher made his debut announcing Holy Week at his school Marcelo Spínola in Umbrete and has given proclamations for the Young Groups of Triana, the Esperanza de Triana, the Virgen de la Paz of Ronda, and the Proclamation of the Glories of Seville in 2007.
For the residents of Triana, the appointment as Trianero del Año is a source of pride. The Velá de Santa Ana, with its lanterns, booths, and traditions, will be the setting where tribute is paid to a journalist who carries the neighbourhood in his soul. The exact date of the award presentation will be communicated soon, although traditionally the recognition takes place during the days of the Velá, at the end of July.
