The Secretary General of the PSOE in Seville, Javier Fernández, has confirmed that Antonio Muñoz is the only candidate so far and has encouraged him to participate in the internal process.
The Secretary General of the PSOE in Seville, Javier Fernández, has publicly supported Antonio Muñoz's candidacy for the primaries that will choose the socialist candidate for the Mayor of Seville in the 2027 municipal elections. Fernández, who also presides over the Provincial Council, has assured that Muñoz has conveyed to him that he maintains the "desire, enthusiasm, and strength" to lead the party's project in the capital again.
"Evidently, I directly encourage him to run if he has that enthusiasm and strength," Fernández declared at a meeting with the media, confirming that the former mayor is currently the only leader who has expressed his intention to aspire to the position. The candidate designation process in municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants is scheduled for September, according to the Andalusian PSOE calendar.
Antonio Muñoz was already the socialist candidate in 2023, when he entered the elections as acting mayor after replacing Juan Espadas in the final stretch of the previous term. However, the PSOE lost control of the city to the Popular Party, which secured a sufficient majority to govern. Now, Muñoz seeks to run again to regain the Mayor's office.
The provincial leader of the PSOE has reminded that candidates must gather a significant number of endorsements from the membership, which can reach 15% of the electorate. Fernández has invited any other interested socialist to step forward and announce it publicly as soon as possible, although he acknowledged that so far there are no other names on the table.
Regarding the primary process, Fernández has defended that they are neither positive nor negative in themselves, but rather their outcome depends on how the party manages the process. "They can become a boost of enthusiasm towards an electoral victory, but they can also generate divisions when not organized properly," he pointed out. Nevertheless, he emphasized that when it is necessary to vote, it will be the membership that decides sovereignly who represents the PSOE in the elections.
Fernández has also not ruled out that these processes could be avoided if there is unanimous political agreement around a candidacy. For now, the only name that is strongly mentioned is that of Antonio Muñoz, who has already announced both publicly and internally his willingness to participate.
For the residents of Seville, the designation of the socialist candidate will be key ahead of the 2027 municipal elections, where the PSOE will try to regain a government it lost just four years ago. The primary process, which could take place in the coming weeks, will define who will lead the opposition to the current PP government team.
