Rowers from Club Náutico Sevilla have been key in Spain's seventh place at the Youth Cup, held in Lucerne (Switzerland). In total, they achieved one gold, one silver, and three bronzes.
The Spanish youth rowing team concluded its participation in the Youth Cup with a tally of five medals, all of which were from Seville. The competition, which brought together the best under-19 athletes from 17 European countries, took place from Friday in Lucerne (Switzerland) and concluded on Sunday with notable success for Club Náutico Sevilla.
Of the 16 athletes that made up the Spanish delegation, seven belonged to the Andalusian Federation, and most of them were rowers from Club Náutico Sevilla. These athletes were the only ones to reach the podium for Spain, achieving one gold, one silver, and three bronzes.
The first medal came on Saturday when Pepe Rivas, alongside Basque Manex Larretxea, won bronze in the coxless pair category. The following day, the pair repeated their success and added a second bronze, completing a full podium.
Sunday was the highlight for the Spanish delegation. Inés Bernalte was crowned champion in the skiff category, achieving the only gold medal for Spain. Additionally, María Navarro and Inés Izquierdo secured silver in the coxless pair, while Clara Vázquez and Ángela Borreguero, along with Basque Mikele Agüero and Catalan Rita Estarriola, took bronze in the coxless four.
Spain finished in seventh place in the overall points classification, with 187 points. In the female category, they were fifth, and in the male category, ninth. Great Britain dominated the competition with 428 points, followed by Italy (344), Switzerland (291), Germany (257), the Netherlands (238), and France (212). Behind Spain were Ireland, Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, and Sweden.
The rest of the Spanish boats achieved four A-final places and five B-final places, demonstrating the good level of the national team. However, the undisputed spotlight was on the rowers from Club Náutico Sevilla, who contributed all the medals and placed the Seville entity on the continental rowing map.
For Club Náutico Sevilla, these results represent a boost to their youth development and training efforts. The entity, which has already produced great figures in Spanish rowing, sees its young talents shine in a high-level international competition. The next event for these athletes will be the Youth Spanish Championship, where they will aim to maintain their streak of success.
The Youth Cup, also known as Coupe de la Jeunesse, is an annual competition that brings together the best under-19 rowers from Western Europe. This year, the event has been held in Lucerne, one of the cities with the richest rowing tradition on the continent.
