A man wearing gloves and with his face covered has robbed two establishments on Calatrava Street, in the heart of Alameda de Hércules, using a manhole cover to break the glass. The National Police are investigating the incidents that occurred in July.
The National Police are investigating two robberies that took place this July on Calatrava Street, in the vicinity of Alameda de Hércules in Seville, which share the same modus operandi: the thief uses manhole covers to break the glass of the businesses and gain access inside. The robberies occurred at the bakery Manu Jara and the bar El Antojo, located just a few meters from a National Police station.
The first robbery took place in the early hours of July 8 at the bakery Manu Jara, which had just opened its doors at that location only seven days prior. According to sources in the case, the day before, a man exhibiting strange behaviour was loitering in the area. Security cameras captured the individual at 4:35 AM hitting the business's door with a manhole cover. At 4:37 AM, after several blows, he managed to create a hole in the glass. Despite the opening being very small, the thief skillfully managed to squeeze himself into the establishment like a contortionist.
Once inside, the assailant overturned the cash register and took the change that the workers had left, around 100 euros. He also opened some drawers of a piece of furniture but found no more money. The owner of the establishment has expressed her concern about the insecurity that, according to her, has been felt in the area for some time.
The second robbery occurred last Monday, July 14, at the bar El Antojo, located practically opposite the bakery. The method was similar: the thief again used a manhole cover to break the glass of the door. In this case, the bar employees claim that the damage was greater than the loot obtained. The only money he took was the workers' tip jar, a small amount they kept inside. In his haste, the thief took the cash register, which the employees leave open to indicate that there is hardly any money. A neighbour found the drawer discarded in a nearby street.
The National Police have in their possession a video from the security cameras of one of the establishments, which shows the man, who acted with gloves and his face covered. The agents are investigating the incidents to identify the perpetrator. The residents of Alameda de Hércules are surprised by the audacity of the thief, especially because the robberies occurred on a street where there is a National Police station and where members of the Local Police's GAR keep their vehicles.
The owner of the bakery Manu Jara has publicly denounced the insecurity situation that, according to her, has worsened in recent months. Despite the proximity of the security forces, the robberies have occurred without anyone being able to prevent them. Local merchants are calling for more surveillance and measures to prevent these incidents from happening again.
For the moment, the National Police continue their investigations to locate the suspect, who may be linked to other similar robberies in the city. Merchants are advised to take extra precautions and review their security systems.
