Researcher José Luis Cantero and neuropsychologist Gemma J. Martínez will offer a talk on risk factors and prevention of Alzheimer's disease this Wednesday, 23rd September, at 12:00 hours at the Tomás de Ybarra Cultural Centre in Tomares.
The Alzheimer and Neurological Stimulation Family Association (AFAeN), in collaboration with the Town Hall of Tomares, has organised a talk titled “Alzheimer's Disease: Risk Factors and Prevention” which will take place this Wednesday, 23rd September, at 12:00 hours in the Auditorium of the Tomás de Ybarra Cultural Centre, located at Concepción Ibarra, 1. Entry is free until full capacity is reached.
The presentation will be led by the principal investigator of the CIBER of Neurodegenerative Diseases (CIBERNED), José Luis Cantero Lorente, professor of Physiology and PhD in Neurosciences, director of the Functional Neuroscience Laboratory and head of the Neuroimaging Service at UPO. He will be joined by AFAeN neuropsychologist, Gemma J. Martínez Pérez, head of the Neuropsychology Working Group of the Sevilla Delegation of the Official College of Psychology of Western Andalusia and evaluator in Alzheimer's clinical trials (FISEVI).
Both experts will address issues related to brain health and cognitive decline, aiming to inform the residents of Tomares about the services offered by AFAeN, an entity that has been serving individuals with diseases that lead to cognitive capacity loss, such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's or Lewy body dementia, as well as their families and caregivers for 14 years.
The talk is part of the commemoration of World Alzheimer's Day, which was celebrated on 21st September. Among the activities organised, AFAeN set up an information table on 16th September at Cuatro Esquinas, attended by the mayor of Tomares, José María Soriano, the president of AFAeN, Juan Vargas, and the councillor for Social Welfare, Family, Culture, Equality and Women, Magdalena Ybarra.
“On the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day, celebrated on 21st September, I accompanied AFAeN at their information table in Las Cuatro Esquinas. Thank you for your work and for always being there. The work you do throughout the year with people with Alzheimer's and their families in Tomares deserves all our recognition,” highlighted the mayor, José María Soriano.
Tomares has a Stimulation Centre specialised in Cognitive Decline managed by AFAeN, which according to the association is the best-rated in Aljarafe. Here, anyone suffering from a disease that diminishes their cognitive abilities can receive professional treatment to slow down or improve their symptoms. Since last year, AFAeN has had a specialised group in Parkinson's that offers speech therapy, neuropsychology and physiotherapy.
