The Provincial Council of Seville has intensified mosquito control treatments in La Puebla del Río, Coria del Río and Bollullos de la Mitación following the confirmation of mild cases in humans or the detection of the West Nile virus in mosquitoes.
The Provincial Council of Seville has initiated a reinforcement of surveillance and mosquito control actions in three municipalities of Aljarafe declared on alert due to the circulation of the West Nile virus. These are La Puebla del Río, Coria del Río and Bollullos de la Mitación, where mild cases in humans have been confirmed or the presence of the virus has been detected in mosquitoes captured near inhabited areas.
The provincial device, coordinated with the Junta de Andalucía, the town councils and the Doñana Biological Station, includes ground adulticidal treatments and the search for larval breeding sites in peri-urban environments. The interventions are carried out with vehicles equipped with fogging machines during the night to minimize disturbances and maximize effectiveness.
In La Puebla del Río, the alert was extended following the notification of two mild cases in humans on June 23. The Provincial Council maintains periodic insecticide applications while the alert situation lasts, which has been extended until August 13. Even before the cases were known, surveillance tasks and treatments in the locality had already been reinforced.
In Coria del Río, where a mild case was confirmed on June 24, the work had already intensified beforehand. The first peri-urban adulticidal treatment was carried out on June 30 and a new intervention took place on July 15, before the locality was declared an alert zone. New adulticidal work is scheduled for next Wednesday within a radius of 1.5 kilometres around the municipality. Coria had already been on alert since July 16, when the virus was detected in a sample of mosquitoes. According to the Junta's protocol, this situation will remain as long as no new signs of viral circulation appear.
Bollullos de la Mitación, recently declared an alert area due to the detection of the virus in mosquitoes collected in traps near inhabited areas, has also seen increased surveillance. Among the actions carried out are adulticidal treatments in the vicinity of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Cuatrovitas, which covered 0.4 hectares spread over two polygons that include access roads, parking areas and other nearby spaces. The work was carried out on June 30, July 8 and July 21. Additionally, inspections for possible larval breeding sites have been reinforced. In the review on July 6, it was found that four points in the area were dry, and on July 20 no larvae were found at a point with water from the seasonal stream of La Cañada de la Norieta, so treatment was not necessary. Bollullos will continue to be considered an alert area until August 21, provided no new evidence is recorded.
The provincial device covers the peri-urban environments located up to 1.5 kilometres from the main, secondary and dispersed nuclei of the 15 municipalities included by the Junta in the area of special monitoring. Last week, the Provincial Council hosted a technical meeting with the involved administrations and professionals from Tragsatec, the company responsible for implementing the comprehensive plan. The meeting allowed for information sharing, reviewing the progress of the campaign and adapting interventions to the advancement of the mosquito's biological cycle to optimize the effectiveness of the device.
Residents of these localities can expect treatments to continue while the alert persists. Authorities recommend avoiding treated areas during application hours and following the instructions of municipal services. For more information, residents can contact their respective town councils.
