Seville City Council activates a special device from July 21 for the Velá de Santiago and Santa Ana in Triana, with traffic changes, extended hours and new features such as a salon bullfighting exhibition.
The Velá de Santiago and Santa Ana kicks off this Monday, July 21, in the Triana neighbourhood. Until the 26th, Calle Betis, Plaza del Altozano and other points in the historic Seville neighbourhood will become the epicentre of the summer festival in the capital of Seville. The City Council of Seville has designed a special plan that will affect mobility, security and booth timings.
A proclamation and a cucaña marking the start
The official inauguration will be on July 21 with the proclamation by historian Jesús Pozuelo at Altozano. From there, the programme includes concerts, competitions and popular activities. The traditional Cucaña will be held every afternoon at the base of Calle Betis between 18:00 and 21:00, with participants attempting to reach a flag on a greased pole by the Guadalquivir River.
This year, as a new feature, Calle San Jacinto will host a salon bullfighting exhibition organised by the Tomás Campuzano Bullfighting School during the morning of July 26. Additionally, conferences, round tables and exhibitions on the history and heritage of Triana have been scheduled.
Mobility: traffic disruptions, direction changes and taxi stops
The special mobility plan will be active from the afternoon of July 21 until the morning of July 27. The paving works on Calle Castilla will condition part of the plan. Calle San Jorge will have a direction towards Antillano Campos, and this latter street will channel traffic towards Pagés del Corro.
There will be access restrictions on Calle Betis and Plaza del Altozano, with variable limitations depending on the time slots. Temporary traffic disruptions are expected on various streets in the neighbourhood, restrictions for surface parking and the establishment of two provisional taxi stops during night hours, which will be added to the usual stop by the Isabel II Bridge.
Security and booth timings
Municipal services, police and firefighters have supervised the assembly of booths and infrastructures to ensure they meet safety conditions. The booths will be open between 20:00 and 03:00, with extended hours until 04:00 during the nights of Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Half an hour before closing, consumption and music must cease to facilitate an orderly evacuation.
The final touch will come on July 26 with the awarding of distinctions to Trianeros de Honor, Trianeros of the Year and other entities in Plaza del Altozano. After the institutional event, the Velá will conclude with the traditional fireworks display.
