Mayor José Luis Sanz has inaugurated the signage for the Heart Donors Square and Luis Sarmiento Aguilar Street, in the Nervión district, next to Juan Antonio Cavestany Street.
The mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, presided over the inauguration on Tuesday of the Heart Donors Square and Luis Sarmiento Aguilar Street, two new locations in the street directory situated in the Nervión district, next to Juan Antonio Cavestany Street. With these names, the City Council pays tribute to those who donate organs, blood, and bone marrow, as well as to the families who authorise donations in the most difficult moments.
The square dedicated to donors acknowledges the generosity of those who make it possible for transplants to save lives. The mayor wanted to highlight this act of solidarity and the role of family members who, in complicated circumstances, allow their loved ones' organs to continue saving lives even when they are no longer present.
“This Heart Donors Square pays tribute to the generosity of those who donate organs, blood, and bone marrow, as well as to the families who, in the most difficult moments, make it possible for their loved ones' organs to continue saving lives even when they are no longer here.”
Sanz linked this recognition to the healthcare activity in the city. As he recalled, the Hospital Virgen del Rocío performs 21.8% of all transplants in Andalusia, while Virgen Macarena has established itself as the non-transplant hospital with the highest activity in the community, sending key organs to the national and international network.
“Our city stands out not only for the solidarity of Sevillians but also for its reference hospitals.”
The mayor added that this space also aims to recognise the work of public healthcare professionals and Seville's leadership as a benchmark in donation and transplants.
Luis Sarmiento Aguilar Street is named after a worker from Astilleros and a union representative with roots in the San Bernardo neighbourhood, who underwent a liver transplant in 2002 due to a disease caused by a hepatitis virus. This experience strengthened his commitment to organ, blood, and bone marrow donation.
“Today we not only honour Luis for his ties to the San Bernardo neighbourhood but also for his union commitment, for his advocacy work in defence of social rights, and for his dedication to organ donation.”
With the addition of both spaces to the street directory, the Nervión area next to Juan Antonio Cavestany Street is configured as a point of awareness about donation in the city. Residents who come by from now on will be able to identify these streets with their new signs.
