The Antiquarian and Second-Hand Book Fair in Seville kicks off on September 25 in the Plaza de San Francisco with 23 exhibitors and a series of round tables featuring Marta Sanz, Elvira Navarro, and Sara Mesa, among others.
The 49th edition of the Antiquarian and Second-Hand Book Fair in Seville (FLAOS) will take place from September 25 to October 18 in the Plaza de San Francisco. Organised by the City Council of Seville through the Tourism and Culture Department, the event will bring together 23 exhibitors, of which 21 are second-hand bookstores from across Spain.
Under the slogan ‘Antique books, new stories’, the fair expands its cultural programme with round tables, guided tours, workshops, and children's activities. The aim, according to the Tourism and Culture delegate, Angie Moreno, is to “make a qualitative leap in the cultural offering of the Fair, bring it closer to new audiences, and reclaim the antique and second-hand book as a living cultural object.”
“One of the main focuses of this new programme will be the series of round tables, which will gather prominent names from literature and journalism in the Logia Room of the City Council of Seville to discuss our relationship with books, the relevance of classics, and new ways of reading,” Moreno noted.
The series of round tables will be held on Tuesdays at 7 PM in the Logia Room of the City Council. The first session will be on September 29 with Marta Sanz, who will talk about the value of books as cult objects and inherited readings. She will be joined by journalist Patricia Godino.
On October 6, under the title ‘Is everything already written?’, writers Elvira Navarro and Sara Mesa will participate, moderated by journalist Paco Camero. They will discuss the influence of the classics and how the demand for new works can overshadow relevant pieces.
The series will conclude on October 13 with ‘Young old readers’, a conversation between poet Rosa Berbel, literary prescriber Candela Ferreira, and writer Pepe Pérez Muelas, moderated by journalist Gonzalo Gragera, focusing on young readers.
Colombian writer Héctor Abad Faciolince, author of The Oblivion We’ll Be, will deliver the inaugural speech on Thursday, September 24 at 8 PM at the Círculo Mercantil de Sevilla. Attendance requires prior invitation.
As a new feature, the fair will organise guided tours of the venue for the first time to discover the booths and participating bookstores. Writer and journalist Eva Díaz Pérez will launch this programme on September 28 at 6 PM, and writer and journalist Andrés González Barba will do so on October 5. Prior registration is required, with information available on the FLAOS website and social media.
The fair maintains its offering of exhibitors with bookstores such as Librería Renacimiento, Librería Sur, Rola Libros, Librería Los Terceros, Librería Alejandría, Librería Don Cecilio, Librería Bosch, Librería Boteros, Librería Quilombo, Hiperión Libros, Marcos Cachuán Libros, among others.
The event coincides with the start of autumn, a time when the Plaza de San Francisco becomes a meeting point for collectors, readers, and the curious. The usual hours of the fair will be the same as in previous years, although it is recommended to check for possible variations on the official channels.
