Mayor José Luis Sanz highlights Seville's research talent at the inauguration of the International Congress on Neurodegenerative Diseases, taking place from 21 to 23 September 2026 under the honorary presidency of Queen Sofía.
The Mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, inaugurated this Monday the International Congress on Neurodegenerative Diseases (ICND 2026), which will be held from 21 to 23 September 2026 in the city under the honorary presidency of Queen Sofía. The event, organised by the Queen Sofía Foundation and the CIEN Foundation since 2013, is supported by the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBIS) and the City Council of Seville.
In his speech, Sanz emphasised Seville's role as a "capital of knowledge" and argued that administrations should facilitate the work of researchers: "The role of public administrations is not to do science, but to create the ideal conditions for science to happen."

The mayor cited Dr. José López Barneo, founder of IBIS, president of the Spanish Society of Neurosciences, and first director of CIBERNED, as an example. According to Sanz, his work "laid the foundations of an ecosystem that today flourishes with undeniable vigour."
"That research talent, of which Dr. López Barneo was a precursor, is embodied today in internationally renowned Seville scientists such as Alberto Pascual, Pablo Mir, or Michel Grothe"
These researchers will play a prominent role at the congress, where they will present the advances developed in Seville. The meeting will bring together over 180 national and international experts in neurodegenerative diseases.
The event coincides with the commemoration of International Alzheimer’s Day, a disease that affects thousands of families in the province. The sessions will be held in Seville, and participation is open to professionals and researchers in the field.
