The Town Hall of Los Palacios and Villafranca demands an urgent solution from the Territorial Delegation of Education for the vocational training students at IES Marismas, after two prefabricated classrooms were dismantled without an alternative planned.
The mayor of Los Palacios and Villafranca, Juan Manuel Valle, has conveyed to the Territorial Delegate for Educational Development and Vocational Training and for University, Research and Innovation in Seville, Gloria Guillén Rodríguez, the council's discontent regarding the situation of the institutes in the municipality. The mayor is calling for an urgent response ahead of the start of the 2026/2027 academic year.
The origin of the conflict lies at IES Marismas, where two prefabricated classrooms have been dismantled and their removal is planned. These facilities were used, among other purposes, to teach the cycle of Agrojardinería and Floral Compositions, which is attended by nearly forty students from both courses along with their teaching staff.
Although the Town Hall acknowledges that these classrooms did not meet the appropriate conditions for quality education, it argues that they constituted the only available space for classes and practical activities. Therefore, it believes that if the educational administration decided to remove them, it should have previously provided an alternative.
“We cannot allow nearly forty students to start the academic year without having an adequate space to receive their training and develop their practical workshops. If these facilities had to be removed, the educational administration should have previously planned an alternative that guaranteed the continuity of teachings under suitable conditions,” Valle stated.
The mayor reminded that the expansion of IES Marismas remains pending despite repeated requests from the Town Hall and the educational community over the years.
“The definitive solution lies in the expansion of IES Marismas, but while this is not executed, the educational administration has the responsibility to ensure dignified and adequate spaces for students to carry out their studies normally,” he pointed out.
Valle emphasised that the lack of spaces in the institutes of the municipality is not a new problem. The expansions of IES Almudeyne, IES Marismas, and IES Joaquín Romero Murube have been demanded for years.
“The problem of educational infrastructure in Los Palacios and Villafranca cannot continue to be postponed. We have been waiting for necessary actions for our institutes for years, and now we find ourselves, in addition, with the removal of temporary spaces without an alternative for the students who need them,” he affirmed.
The mayor also focused on Vocational Training, especially on the cycles that require workshop classrooms and specific spaces for practical training.
“We are asking our young people to commit to Vocational Training, to train and acquire the necessary skills to enter the job market. What we cannot accept is that this training does not have the necessary spaces to develop normally,” Valle added.
In light of this situation, the Town Hall has requested an urgent meeting with the Territorial Delegation to address the future of the Agrojardinería and Floral Compositions cycle and demand an immediate solution for students and teachers.
In that meeting, the educational infrastructure needs of the municipality will also be analysed, and the planned schedule for the pending expansions of the three institutes will be discussed. The mayor has reiterated the Town Hall's willingness to dialogue and institutional collaboration, while maintaining his determination to continue demanding the necessary actions for the students of Los Palacios and Villafranca to have adequate facilities.
