The V Elio Antonio de Nebrija Regatta, Memorial Gonzalo Sánchez, takes place this Saturday, September 19, at Balsa de Melendo after being postponed in February due to bad weather. It is the first scoring event of the XXIII Andalusian Ranking.
The Tarfía Canoeing Club and Balsa de Melendo will be the venue this Saturday, September 19, for the Andalusian Promotion and 3,000 meters Championship, which this year adopts the name V Elio Antonio de Nebrija Regatta (Memorial Gonzalo Sánchez). The event, organised by the Andalusian Canoeing Federation, has the collaboration of the Lebrija City Council through the Municipal Sports Board, the local club, and the Water Users Community of Sector BXII of Bajo Guadalquivir.
The competition was initially scheduled for February 7, but adverse weather conditions forced its cancellation. It now returns as the first scoring event of the XXIII Andalusian Ranking and the Andalusian Leagues, according to the regulations published by the regional federation.
Participants will include athletes from categories ranging from prebenjamin to veteran, as well as paracanoe modalities. The distances will be 750, 1,500, and 3,000 meters depending on the categories. For the 3,000 meters, the course will combine one lap of 2,250 meters and another of 750 meters.
The day will start early. The first race is set for 9:30 AM, and heats will follow throughout the morning, with the last ones initially scheduled for 1:50 PM and 1:52 PM for the senior categories. The Andalusian Canoeing Federation warns that these times are provisional and may change for organisational or weather-related reasons.
Before the races, the collection of bib numbers and confirmation of registrations will take place between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM, while the delegates' meeting is scheduled for 9:00 AM.
The Lebrija City Council encourages residents to come to Balsa de Melendo in the morning to follow the competition and support the participants in this new edition of the regatta, which keeps the memory of Gonzalo Sánchez alive.
